Picture this: you’re surrounded by sprawling vineyards, with the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains looming in the distance. Parras, also known as Parras de la Fuente, sits snugly in a valley, making for some stunning views all around.
Aside from its natural beauty, it’s also the birthplace of Mexican wine! Yep, you heard that right. This charming town is famous for its winemaking tradition, dating back centuries. So, if you’re a wine enthusiast or just someone who enjoys a good glass now and then, Parras is the place to be.
Parras is a delightful little town in the northern part of Mexico. It’s in the state of Coahuila, which is known for its rugged landscapes and warm hospitality.
July is my preference to tour Parras de la Fuente when the vineyards are at their best. The summer temperatures seldom go above 35°C. July is a very hot month so you may want to consider the historic climate trends before you make your final bookings.
As you wander through the streets, you’ll notice the distinct colonial architecture, adding a touch of old-world charm to the atmosphere. And oh, the aromas! Imagine the scent of freshly baked bread wafting from quaint little bakeries, mixed with the earthy fragrance of the vineyards – it’s simply heavenly.
Casa Madero, one of Mexico’s oldest wineries, is just a stone’s throw away from Parras. It’s in the picturesque countryside, only about 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from the heart of town. So, if you’re staying in Parras, it’s super easy to hop over to Casa Madero for a wine-tasting adventure or a leisurely stroll through the vineyards. Just a short jaunt and you’ll learn about its rich history and the flavors of Mexican winemaking.
Parras has a very proud history with Casa Modero. On August 19th, 1597 Casa Madero was founded by Lorenzo García in the town of Santa María de las Parras (Holy Mary of the Grapevines), which makes it the home to the oldest winery in the Americas.
The Casa Modero label includes a range of varietals, with its chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Syrah winning awards. Its brandies are among the best in Mexico. You certainly won’t feel lonely when you open a bottle of Shiraz. Someone is bound to join you. However, soon you will order a few bottles to take home!

The best way to get to know a town’s history and all the sightseeing worth your while, is to do the tourist train tour. Of all the fun we had, the only disadvantage was that the tour guide could not speak English (the local language is Spanish), so we did not have a clue what he was saying! Therefore I advise taking plenty of photos during the tourist train’s trip, and later it will fall into place as you pick up information pamphlets.
It’s not just a statue; it’s a symbol of the town’s rich history and community spirit. Legend has it that the clock was a gift from a wealthy local family to commemorate a special occasion – the centennial celebration of Parras.
But here’s where it gets interesting: The clock wasn’t just any ordinary timepiece. It was crafted by a renowned artisan from Europe, brought over especially for this purpose. As the story goes, the clock was meant to represent more than just the passage of time; it was a symbol of progress, unity, and the enduring spirit of Parras.
Over the years, the clock became a beloved landmark, serving as a gathering point for locals and visitors alike. Its intricate design and melodious chimes captured the hearts of everyone who passed by. And to this day, it stands proudly in Plaza del Reloj, a testament to Parras’ vibrant past and promising future. So, next time you find yourself in Parras, be sure to pay a visit to the clock statue – you might just feel a sense of connection to its timeless tale.
The Municipality President Building in Parras does have an interesting backstory. It’s said to be a replica of the Government Palace in Saltillo, the capital city of Coahuila.
The story goes that the building’s design was inspired by the grandeur of the Government Palace, which is a symbol of the state’s governance and history. So, when you gaze upon the Municipality President Building in Parras, you’re essentially catching a glimpse of Saltillo’s architectural heritage.
While it may not be as massive or imposing as its counterpart in Saltillo, the Municipality President Building still holds its own charm and significance. It’s a testament to Parras’ connection to the wider region and its own unique place in Coahuila’s story. So, if you’re wandering around Parras, don’t forget to admire this little piece of architectural history!
Parras’ annual grape harvest (Feria de la Uva y el Vino) isn’t just a simple gathering of fruits – it’s a celebration deeply rooted in tradition and culture. Picture this: the town comes alive with excitement as families and friends gather to partake in the age-old tradition of grape harvesting.
