Ha Long Bay Vietnam is one of those mystical destinations that you will definitely find worth a visit.  Ha Long meaning ‘Descending Dragon’ is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The incredible vistas that play before your eyes when you first arrive at Ha Long Bay are simply mysterious and magical all at once.  With bright green emerald water and a very peaceful tide the water are most inviting to scuba divers and holiday makers.  But it is the more than 1000 towering limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes topped with rainforest-like vegetation that catches your eye.  In my opinion it is simply breathtakingly beautiful.

What to expect

You will find many fishing villages with floating houses as fishing is a very strong industry here.

There are two big islands, Tuần Châu and Cát Bà, which have permanent inhabitants, as well as tourist facilities.  Here you will also find hotels and a lot of the islands have fantastic beaches. Cát Bà is the most popular island.

Many of the rock formations are hollow inside and there are many awesome caves to explore.

How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?

Ha Long Bay is about 170 km per car from Hanoi and I would suggest maybe two days to explore and experience everything.

When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?

October to December is fall season.  Although very popular with tourists, at this time of year, it is the best time to visit.  June to September is summer but it is actually then their low-season due to the higher chance of storms and typhoons.

Is Ha Long Bay worth a visit?

In my opinion it is definitely worth a visit.  This is something you will not experience anywhere else.

If you are looking for a very special experience – do a cruise at Ha Long Bay – See below under “Things to do” – it is very romantic and special.

  • In 2012, New 7 Wonders Foundation officially named Ha Long Bay as one of New Seven Natural Wonders of the world.
