the most famous square in milan, Italy

Piazza del Duomo for 1st time visitors

One of the most photographed squares in the world, where the famous and beautiful Milan Cathedral (Duomo) is situated. “Piazza del Duomo,” translates to “Cathedral Square” in English. It is one of the main and most iconic squares in Milan, Italy, and serves as a central hub for both locals and tourists.  It’s the one stop every tourist has on his/her list, and yes it is worth it.

“Standing in Piazza del Duomo is one of those moments you never forget. The first thing you notice is the sheer scale of the Duomo di Milano. It took my breath away. It is beautiful in a way that feels almost overwhelming, especially if you are not used to cathedrals of this size where you come from.” – Elmari

The Cathedral of Milan

The Duomo itself is a breathtaking masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with its towering spires and intricate details that have stood the test of time. Inside, you can explore its grand halls, adorned with stunning artwork and religious significance.

Additionally, climbing up to the Cathedral’s rooftop rewards you with stunning panoramic views of the city of Milan.  If you’re not afraid of heights and you have the time, do it.

Piazza del Duomo Milan - Is it worth a visit

What’s the Milan Cathedral like inside?

Duomo di Milano is dramatic on the outside, but the interior feels completely different. The light changes. The noise from the square disappears. Everything becomes tall, quiet, and almost “respectful”, if I can put it that way…

Here are a few things that make the inside special:

  • The Forest of Columns:  There are 52 massive pillars holding up the ceiling. They rise so high that your eyes automatically travel upward. It feels grand, but also peaceful.  “Must say this is pretty impressive.”
  • The Stained Glass Windows:  Some of the largest stained glass windows in the world are here. When sunlight comes through, the colours glow deep red, blue, and gold. It is especially beautiful in the late morning when the light is stronger.
  • The Statue of Saint Bartholomew:  One of the most unusual sculptures you’ll ever see is inside — Saint Bartholomew shown with his skin draped over his shoulders. It’s detailed and slightly shocking, and people always stop when they see it.  (I missed this one…)
  • The Golden Madonna Above:  High above the altar is the golden statue of the Madonna, known as the Madonnina. She also stands on the very top of the cathedral outside, watching over Milan. Locals feel very protective of her.

The Rooftop Access
Technically not “inside,” but accessed from within — walking on the cathedral roof is unforgettable. You move between marble spires and statues, almost at eye level. It gives you a completely different perspective of the city.

Practical Tips

  • Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) or you may be refused entry. Buying a combined ticket for the cathedral and rooftop is worth it.

The outside impresses you. The inside makes you slow down.

The statue on the square

On the square you’ll notice an impressive statue of a man on horseback. This is King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. He played a key role in bringing the country together in the 19th century, and this monument honours that achievement.

The statue has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the square. It stands near the entrance to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, anchoring the space and reminding visitors that this is not only a beautiful gathering place, but also a setting where modern Italy began to take shape.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

It is pretty impressive to walk through this building thinking it is, after all, just a shopping centre… or not. It’s grand. It’s stylish. It echoes luxury and money. It’s busy. It’s beautiful.

At times, I almost didn’t know where to look. There’s so much to take in, and it can feel a little overwhelming for a first-time visitor.

TRAVEL TIP:  Take your time. Don’t rush. I had studied almost every little detail before our visit, but when I finally got there, I was so overwhelmed that I forgot some of the things I had been most excited about — like the famous bull mosaic.

I even forgot to take photos in of the special spots I had been looking forward to capturing. It’s that kind of place: beautiful but busy.

Inside, you’ll find shops like Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace, and Armani — high-end boutiques that match the grandeur of the Galleria. There are also beautiful cafés and historic spots like Camparino, where you can pause for an espresso or aperitivo while watching people stroll through the arcade.

Best time to visit (light makes a difference…)

  • In the morning, the square feels fresh and calm. Soft sunlight warms the marble of the Duomo di Milano, bringing out delicate pink and gold tones. Shadows are long and gentle, and the whole space feels almost peaceful despite the city waking up around it.
  • At night, everything changes. Lights highlight the cathedral’s intricate details, and the square glows with a completely different energy. The hustle of the day softens, street lamps and shop windows shimmer, and the atmosphere becomes almost magical — a mix of romance, elegance, and city life.

It’s worth seeing both — the same place, two very different moods.
