Do this while you're in Skopelos

After plenty of hunting for the perfect Greek island to film Mama Mia‘s spectacular beach and island scenes, the directors decided on Skopelos. You’ll remember it as “Kalokairi” in the film.

Those interested in a bit of Hollywood glam or a bit of ABBA nostalgia will love the Mama Mia Island Tour.

Skopelos Island has plenty of hiking opportunities, either on your own or with a group. That said, I seriously suggest joining a hiking group on a tour, albeit a short tour. The guides are super knowledgeable and you will leave the excursion knowing much more about the area. You’ll have a new appreciation for this stunning island having joined a tour group.

Don’t forget to taste and buy pine honey – it is delish and used in many traditional Skopelos dishes!

Kayaking is a popular activity in Skopelos and a great alternative to discover the island’s beaches and caves.

Panormos beach is the place to be at sunset, while Kastani beach is probably the best sunbathing spot on the island.

While you meander through the downtown area, you’ll find plenty of cafes to relax at between absorbing Skopelos’ beautiful Greek architecture.

Church of Agios Ioannis

If you’re up to climbing 199 steps, you will set foot in the very same place where the Mama Mia wedding took place. Apart from that, the tiny church with spectacular views has such a beautiful ambiance and it is a glorious invitation on itself to sit back and spend some time inside, just being yourself.

Whitewashed buildings

One of my favorite activities is to walk not only the main streets but also the beautiful narrow cobbled alleyways winking at me to come and explore them.

Ancient times

The Venetian Castle of Skopelos is worth visiting and also has a restaurant nearby, which makes for a nice morning sightseeing activity. You’ll find it at Akropoli tis Archeas Peparithou and is accessible by car and on foot. There is a really beautiful footpath from the edge of the harbor in Panagitsa that will lead you to the castle.

The Monastery of St. Barbara dates back to 1648 and is a treasure with a 15th-century wood-carved iconostasis. Also known as Agia Varvara Monastery, it sits above the town. Again, lots of breathtaking views and conveniently near to another site worth seeing, namely the Nunnery of Saint John the Baptist.

Agios Riginos Monastery is dedicated to the patron Saint of Skopelos and the home to the tomb of the Saint who was martyred in the 4th century.

Roll your clothes instead of folding them to save space in your luggage. It also prevents wrinkles (especially when you don’t have a travel-size steamer) and it’s easier to find specific items.

Use leak-proof sleeves for your toiletries to prevent spills in your luggage. Keep things tidy and hassle-free!
