To reach Berber villages from Marrakech, you have two options:
By Car: Renting a car or hiring a private driver is a convenient way to reach Berber villages. The villages are often nestled in the Atlas Mountains, and having your own transportation allows for flexibility and the opportunity to explore at your own pace.
By Tour: These tours typically include transportation, a guide, and visits to several villages where you can experience Berber culture, meet locals, and enjoy traditional meals. There is a 1-day hiking trip to the Atlas Mountains, from Marrakech, that also includes a camel ride.

These traditional foods offer a wonderful introduction to the rich and diverse culinary heritage of Marrakech and Morocco as a whole. Each dish is bursting with flavors and textures that reflect the country’s vibrant culture and history. Bon appétit!
Chicken Tajine stew: This is a signature Moroccan dish cooked in a tajine, a cone-shaped clay pot. It typically consists of tender chicken pieces simmered with a variety of spices, vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and sometimes olives or preserved lemons. The slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld together beautifully, resulting in a rich and aromatic stew.
Couscous: Often considered the national dish of Morocco, couscous is a staple made from steamed semolina grains. It’s fluffy and light, served as a base for a variety of meat and vegetable toppings, such as lamb, chicken, or vegetables in a flavorful broth. Couscous dishes are often enjoyed during festive occasions and family gatherings.
Pastilla savory pie: Also known as bastilla or b’stilla, this is a unique and savory Moroccan pie typically filled with layers of shredded meat (usually pigeon or chicken), eggs, almonds, and spices such as cinnamon and saffron, all encased in thin layers of crispy pastry dough. It’s a delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors, often topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon.
Harira soup: This is a hearty and comforting soup that’s commonly enjoyed during Ramadan to break the fast. It’s a nutritious blend of tomatoes, lentils, chickpeas, and lamb or beef, flavored with a mix of herbs and spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cilantro. Harira is often served with dates and traditional bread for dipping.
Seffa as a side dish: Seffa is a traditional Moroccan dish made from steamed vermicelli noodles, typically served as a side dish alongside savory main courses like tajines or grilled meats. It’s often sweetened with powdered sugar and cinnamon and garnished with almonds or raisins, providing a delightful contrast to the savory flavors of the main dishes.
Riads – traditional Moroccan houses with private interior courtyards – are a huge part of Marrakech’s appeal.
Arab word ‘ryad’ (meaning ‘garden’) is applied to townhouses built around an inner courtyard or garden. True riads will have lush plants in four planting beds and a central fountain, but many variations exist.
