The drive from Vienna to Hallstatt is the kind of road trip where you will probably find yourself saying, “Should we stop here?” more than once. Leave Vienna behind and the scenery gradually changes from city streets to rolling countryside, pretty villages, sparkling lakes and mountains rising in the distance. With a car, you can take your time, make a few lovely detours and discover places you might otherwise miss. Here is how I would plan the Vienna to Hallstatt road trip, including the stops that are worth pulling over for.
Driving from Vienna to Hallstatt and back, is much more than simply getting from one famous Austrian town to another. The road takes you through lakes, mountains, tiny villages and some of the most beautiful scenery in Austria.
This 4-day Vienna to Hallstatt road trip is designed for travelers who want to see Hallstatt, but also want to experience the beautiful places along the way. I’ve included where to stop, where to stay, what to skip if you’re watching your budget, and a few places that might surprise you.
Distance: approximately 290–300 km
Driving time: roughly 3½ hours without stops
Best option for this itinerary: rental car
Why: you can easily visit Obertraun, Gosau, St Wolfgang, Sankt Johann and smaller villages along the way.
Start early. We left Vienna at around 06:00, heading towards Hallstatt, and this is one drive where getting up early is worth it. As you leave Vienna behind, the landscape gradually changes, with green countryside, mountain peaks and beautiful lakes appearing along the way.
Today we’re keeping things simple: leave Vienna early, enjoy one lovely breakfast stop along the way, and make our way to the Hallstatt area. The plan is to reach a nearby town where you might want to stay overnight, leaving us plenty of time to enjoy Hallstatt and its beautiful surroundings.
OUR TRAVEL TIP: Don’t be tempted to fill this drive with sightseeing stops. Save some of those beautiful places for the return journey — we’ve got a few good ideas for you later.
BREAKFAST TIP: If you’re leaving Vienna at 06:00, have a light breakfast before you leave and save a proper coffee-and-breakfast stop for one of the beautiful villages or lakeside towns you’ll encounter on the return journey.
This lovely Austrian town is a wonderful place to stretch your legs, have breakfast and take a short stroll through the attractive town centre. The rivers Enns and Steyr meet here, adding to the scenery, and the main square is an inviting place for a coffee before getting back on the road.
Allow about 1–2 hours in Steyr — enough time for breakfast, a wander and a few photographs without turning the morning into a full sightseeing stop.
Then it’s back in the car, with the mountains and lakes of the Salzkammergut waiting ahead.

Rather than driving straight into Hallstatt, consider making Obertraun your base for the day. It sits beautifully on the opposite side of Lake Hallstatt, with wonderful views across the water towards the famous village.
If you’re travelling by car, Obertraun can also be a more practical place to park. From here, you can continue to Hallstatt using the available local transport connections, turning your arrival into part of the experience rather than simply looking for a parking space.
Parking in Hallstatt can be expensive especially if you need to make use of the public parking while staying there – remember to add this to your calculations and budget for overnight cost.
And this is one of the reasons we would recommend you to stay in Obertraun. Parking is way better and there is another bonus: your first view of Hallstatt from across the lake can be absolutely magical.
We arrived in the afternoon in Hallstatt…
Once you arrive, don’t rush straight into a list of attractions.
Start by simply walking through the village.
Follow the narrow streets, look at the flower-decorated buildings, wander along the waterfront and stop whenever you see a view that makes you reach for your camera. Hallstatt is one of those places where the simple pleasure is often just being there and taking it all in.

Start your morning slowly in Obertraun. If you’ve stayed here overnight, this is the time to enjoy the setting before the day-trippers arrive in the Hallstatt area.
Take a walk beside the lake, enjoy a coffee and simply look across towards the mountains. Obertraun has a wonderfully peaceful feel in the morning, and this is one of the reasons I think it makes such a good alternative to staying in Hallstatt.
If you didn’t manage to see everything yesterday, you have a little extra time this morning.
This is also a good opportunity to take those photographs you’ve been waiting for. The waterfront, village streets and mountain backdrop are especially beautiful in the quieter morning hours, so maybe you can head over to Hallstatt before the day-trippers arrive.
Then it’s time to leave Hallstatt behind and continue the road trip.
Exploring Hallstatt takes about 4 to 6 hours for most travelers, but it depends on what you want to see and do.
Here’s a quick breakdown to help you plan:
Strolling through the Village and Market Square (1-2 hours): Hallstatt’s charming streets are compact and easy to walk around. You’ll want time for photos, maybe a coffee break, and soaking up the lake views.
Skywalk and Salt Mine (2-3 hours): If you take the funicular to the Skywalk, budget around an hour for the round-trip and time to enjoy the view. For the salt mine tour, add another hour to explore the tunnels and learn about Hallstatt’s salt history.
Optional Extras:
In total, 4 to 6 hours lets you experience Hallstatt’s highlights, with more time if you’re interested in leisurely meals or wandering a bit more. For this reason you might want to overnight here, or nearby.
Travel Tip –
Now comes one of my favourite parts of the journey.
Drive towards St Wolfgang and Wolfgangsee, where the scenery changes from the dramatic Hallstatt mountains to a wonderful combination of lake, forest and Alpine villages.
It’s about a 40-minute drive from Hallstatt.
Don’t rush this section. Stop when you see a beautiful viewpoint, pull over for photographs and allow yourself time for a coffee or lunch beside the lake.
St Wolfgang is exactly the kind of Austrian village you imagine when planning a trip like this — pretty houses, flowers, narrow streets and the deep blue-green lake surrounded by mountains.
Walk through the village, visit the lakeside and find a café where you can sit outside for a while.

If you have more time, you can also take a boat trip on Lake Wolfgang or ride the Schafberg Railway for spectacular mountain and lake views.
Things to do:
After St Wolfgang, continue towards Sankt Johann im Pongau, your overnight stop.
The scenery becomes increasingly mountainous as you travel west, making this another enjoyable part of the road trip.
Stay overnight in Sankt Johann. It gives you time to enjoy the area properly and makes the final day much more relaxed.
Don’t try to see everything. The beauty of this road trip is the journey itself. Hallstatt may be the name that brought you here, but the lakes, villages and mountain scenery between Hallstatt and Sankt Johann can become some of your favorite memories. You might even want to add another day here to explore and/or relax.
Start your final morning with a relaxed breakfast in Sankt Johann im Pongau. You don’t need a packed sightseeing schedule today — this is your chance to enjoy one last taste of the Austrian Alps before heading back towards Vienna.
If you have time, take a short walk through town or drive up towards Alpendorf for one last mountain view.
If you didn’t visit Liechtensteinklamm yesterday, this morning is a good opportunity. The spectacular gorge has wooden walkways, waterfalls and steep rock walls, making it one of the most impressive natural attractions near Sankt Johann.
Allow roughly 1½–2 hours for the visit, including the walk.

Now it’s time to head east.
And remember those places we told you to save for the drive back?
This is the day for them.
Drive from Sankt Johann to Vienna (3-4 hours): Take your time on the drive back, stopping to take in some of the stunning countryside.
Instead of treating the journey as simply a long drive to Vienna, choose one or two stops that appeal to you. This keeps the day enjoyable without turning it into a race.
If you didn’t have enough time around Wolfgangsee on Day 3, St. Gilgen makes a lovely final lakeside stop.
Walk along the waterfront, enjoy a coffee or lunch and take in the view across Lake Wolfgang before continuing towards Vienna.
If you’re happy to add a little extra time to the journey, Melk is another possibility. The town is famous for its magnificent Benedictine abbey overlooking the Danube. It is quite a sight….
For a budget-focused trip, though, I’d make a visit to the Abbey optional rather than essential. You don’t need to turn your final day into another sightseeing marathon. However Melk is a wonderful quick stop for lunch or coffee along the way. We loved this stop.
Aim to arrive in Vienna in the late afternoon or early evening.
After four days of lakes, mountain roads, little villages and Hallstatt’s famous waterfront, you’ll have experienced far more than simply a trip from Vienna to Hallstatt.
And that’s the real reason I like doing this journey by car: Hallstatt is the highlight, but the road between Vienna and Hallstatt is part of the adventure.

Yes, Austria’s water is high-quality, so you’re in luck!
Drink Tap Water: Austrian tap water is clean, safe, and often sourced from alpine springs. Many restaurants will serve tap water if you ask for it as “Leitungswasser,” so there’s no need to pay for bottled water unless you want to.
Bring a Reusable Bottle: A reusable bottle is perfect for filling up at your accommodations or any public fountains. In towns like Hallstatt, Sankt Johann, and St Wolfgang, you’ll often find public water fountains where you can refill.
Look for Public Drinking Fountains: Many Austrian towns, including Hallstatt and St Wolfgang, have public drinking fountains, especially in town squares and popular walking areas. These are typically marked and free to use.
MY PERSONAL TIP: Coming from a country where drinking water in different towns isn’t always kind to my tummy, I was amazed by how delicious the water in Hallstatt tasted. I filled my 1-litre bottle at the fountain and drank the whole thing myself — guarding that bottle like it was my personal treasure and not allowing anyone else to touch it. LOL. Stop here and refill your bottle as many times as you like.
Skip the Salt Mine if: you’re mainly visiting Hallstatt for scenery and village atmosphere.
Skip the Skywalk if: you’re hiking and want to save money.
Skip Melk Abbey if: you’d rather spend more time in the village.
Don’t skip St Wolfgang: if your dream is that picture-perfect Austrian village experience.
