Hallstatt Austria best places to stay hotels practical travel tipsThe Reason You Should Skip Hallstatt — You’ll Never Want to Leave These Places to Stay

Where to stay in Hallstatt can make a big difference to your trip. Stay in the village and you can enjoy those magical quiet moments before the day-trippers arrive and after they leave. Stay across the lake in Obertraun and you may get more space, easier parking and better value.

We’ve stayed in Hallstatt, Austria ourselves, and one of our favorite memories was our self-catering accommodation right on the water’s edge. Sitting there as the sun went down, looking across the lake, was simply wonderful.

But then comes the tempting part: Hallstatt has some incredibly charming places to stay. From cosy guesthouses tucked into the village to lakeside hotels with beautiful views, there are plenty of places that make you want to stay just one more night.

So, where should you stay in Hallstatt? Should you book right in the village for the full postcard experience, or save money and stay nearby? Here’s what we discovered, including the areas worth considering, what to look for when booking, and some lovely places to stay.

OUR FIRST TRAVEL TIP:  You want the walking paths and busy streets to be “behind you” with the views of the lake “in front of you”.  Keep that in mind when you book.

Early morning reflections.

“Waking up in your lakeside room in Hallstatt is a quiet kind of magic. The still water mirrors the pastel houses and steep mountains, almost like a painting come to life. Early mornings are peaceful, with gentle ripples on the lake and maybe a swan gliding past. You’ll hear church bells ringing softly and see the first boats crossing to the other side. The air is crisp, fresh, and smells faintly of pine and stone.  Later, the morning light spills across the village, catching flower boxes and wooden balconies in a warm glow. It feels calm, timeless, and deeply soothing — the kind of morning you’ll want to remember long after you leave.” – Elmari

This spot deserves an honorable mention as a great option for accommodation.  The reason:

Privatzimmer am See - view of Halstattersee

WHY WE RECOMMEND:  It is positioned right next to Lake Hallstatt, with a private balcony directly overlooking the water and mountains, almost in the town center.  It’s a serene setting.  This historic building offers quiet mornings, perfect for relaxing .

This would be a perfect fit if you’re:

  • Wanting a self-catering, lakeside stay with flexibility.
  • Traveling as a family or group who needs two bedrooms and a full kitchen.
  • Looking for a peaceful, private retreat

Keep in mind:  Being in a historic house, the apartment requires climbing stairs which could be difficult for guests with mobility issues.

“Considering it’s location in town, there is no on-site parking, so you’ll need to park in a public lot and walk to the apartment which might be tricky with heavy luggage.  Backpacks work best.  The building is on the older side with traditional style, and it’s situated in a perfect spot.  Clean and spacious.  We loved our stay here.   -Nico & Elmari

Is Hallstatt expensive to stay in?

Yes, Hallstatt is generally expensive to stay in, due to the village’s small size and high demand.

  • Luxury stays: Expect iconic waterfront hotels and prime village location properties (such as Seehotel Grüner Baum or Heritage Hotel Hallstatt). Naturally you pay extra for those direct lake views and historic central settings, but it is so worth it.

  • Mid-Range: Includes traditional family-run guesthouses (Pensionen) and smaller hotels positioned slightly away from the center or main market square (such as in the Echerntal area).

  • Budget: Finding true budget stays within Hallstatt is rare, but not totally impossible. To keep costs lower maybe rather look at neighboring towns:

    • Obertraun: Located directly across the lake; easily accessible via a quick 5-minute train ride, bus, or ferry.

    • Bad Goisern: Located about 10–15 minutes north; offers traditional guest houses, hostels, and holiday apartments with quick rail/bus connections.
