Days here revolve around scenic walks, cable cars climbing toward glaciers, cozy cafés with front-row mountain views, and landscapes so beautiful they barely look real. Grindelwald isn’t just a stop on the map near Interlaken — it’s the kind of place that makes you think: “This is exactly why I came to Switzerland.”

This beautiful place in Switzerland is famous for its dramatic position beneath the North Face of the Eiger (offering spectacular views), winter snow-skiing, scenic mountain landscapes, and access to outdoor adventures like the fabulous Grindelwald-First.
Grindelwald is a mountain village in the Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland, located in the Jungfrau region near Interlaken.
Grindelwald is about 20 kilometers southeast of Interlaken, making it a convenient base for exploring the Jungfrau region.
From here, you can easily reach places like Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren, Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch. However, I wouldn’t make Grindelwald just a base for ticking off attractions. Give yourself time to enjoy Grindelwald itself. Walk through the village in the evening, find a restaurant with a mountain view, watch the last light touch the peaks and let the day slow down.
That combination — extraordinary mountain scenery, easy access to the Alps and a village where you can simply relax and enjoy being there — is what keeps Grindelwald high on my list of places to return to.
And then there is the skiing. Grindelwald is a fantastic choice for a Swiss ski holiday, with a long winter season, extensive ski areas and those extraordinary Eiger views following you around the slopes. Skiers can access the Grindelwald-Wengen and Grindelwald-First areas, with runs suitable for different levels of experience.
Even if you don’t ski, the winter scenery is reason enough to visit. Snow-covered mountains, cozy restaurants, cable cars disappearing into the white landscape and the village glowing beneath the peaks make Grindelwald feel like the Switzerland many of us dream about.
Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the nearest International Airport, serving Zurich and with links to pretty much everywhere in Switzerland.
My tip: If Grindelwald is one stop on a longer Swiss road trip, leave the car parked once you arrive and enjoy the village and mountains without worrying about it.

The railway station, local transport and mountain cable cars give you access to the main attractions and many of the surrounding villages. You can reach viewpoints, hiking areas and mountain excursions without having to deal with winding mountain roads or expensive parking. For a first-time visitor, travelling by train also has another advantage: you get to sit back and watch the landscape change as you climb deeper into the Alps.
Grindelwald is surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular Alpine scenery, including the famous Eiger (as mentioned before), and it is one of the best-known bases for exploring the mountains around Interlaken.
For me as a first-time visitor, the biggest surprise was how close the mountains feel. You don’t have to hike for hours to see them. The Eiger rises dramatically above the village, while cable cars and mountain railways make it easy to reach higher viewpoints, walking trails and mountain restaurants.
For a first visit, Grindelwald is an easy place to enjoy even if you are not an experienced hiker. You can see an extraordinary amount of scenery using the trains and cable cars, then choose a short walk when you feel like getting out into the mountains.
Grindelwald is a compact mountain village, small enough to explore easily while offering full resort amenities like hotels, shops, and restaurants.
The village itself is pleasant to explore. Grindelwald village is compact enough to explore on foot, but it has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including hotels, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, shops and the main railway station. The centre can feel busy during the day, especially in summer, but it becomes much more relaxed in the evening when many visitors have left.
If you are staying overnight I recommend taking a walk through the village after dinner — the streets are quieter, the mountain views are beautiful in the changing evening light, and you get to experience Grindelwald as more than just a starting point for a cable-car ride.
But Grindelwald’s real attraction is what lies beyond the village. Within a short journey, you can be standing beside a mountain lake, looking across a glacier, walking through an Alpine meadow or riding a train towards one of Switzerland’s most famous mountain viewpoints.
A stay of 2 to 3 nights allows enough time to explore Grindelwald-First, take a mountain excursion, and enjoy the local village atmosphere.
The best time depends on what you want to do. June to September is ideal for hiking, mountain walks and enjoying Grindelwald’s green Alpine scenery, with many mountain attractions operating and longer daylight hours. July and August are the busiest months, so expect more visitors and higher accommodation prices.
Winter is the time to come for skiing and snow. Grindelwald is part of the Jungfrau Ski Region and offers access to a variety of slopes, with the Eiger providing an unforgettable backdrop. December to February is particularly popular for winter sports.

Grindelwald First is a mountain destination above the village of Grindelwald in Switzerland. It is reached by a gondola cable car from Grindelwald, taking you up to around 2,167 metres above sea level.
It is not another village. Think of it as a mountain adventure area and viewpoint where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Alps without having to hike up the mountain.
Take the 6-seater gondola cable car directly from the upper end of Grindelwald village up to First. The ride takes roughly 25 minutes.
My tip: Give yourself several hours rather than treating First as a quick photo stop. The scenery becomes even more enjoyable once you leave the busiest viewpoint and start walking.
The gondola ride itself is part of the attraction. From Grindelwald, you rise above the valley and meadows, with increasingly dramatic views as you climb.
One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the mountain is on a First Mountain Cart. These carts have a low seat, handlebars and brakes, and you simply steer and control your speed as you travel downhill on the mountain track.
The usual route runs from Schreckfeld down to Bort, giving you wonderful views of the surrounding Alps along the way. You don’t need to hike back up afterwards — you take the gondola from Grindelwald up to First, ride the gondola down to Schreckfeld, enjoy the cart ride downhill to Bort, and then take the gondola from Bort back to Grindelwald.
It is an easy and fun way to add a little adventure to your First visit without committing to a long mountain hike.
Trottibikes (also called mountain scooters) are another popular way to get down from Grindelwald First.
The Trottibike is a larger, more stable scooter with wide tyres and hand brakes. At First, you can take the gondola up to the mountain, then ride a Trottibike downhill from Bort to Grindelwald on a scenic mountain route. It is different from the Mountain Cart: the Mountain Cart runs from Schreckfeld to Bort, while the Trottibike runs from Bort down to Grindelwald.
So you can actually make a fun downhill combination: gondola → Mountain Cart → Bort → Trottibike → Grindelwald.
Grindelwald vs Lauterbrunnen
Both are beautiful, but they offer quite different experiences.
For a first-time visitor who wants to experience the Swiss Alps through cable cars, mountain railways and a choice of outdoor activities, I would choose Grindelwald.
If you have enough time, though, don’t make it an either-or decision. Lauterbrunnen is easy to visit from Grindelwald and makes an excellent day trip. After all it is one of the most famous places in Switzerland so why not visit both.
You can visit as a day trip, but I would stay overnight – if you can. Grindelwald is possible as a day trip from Interlaken or other nearby destinations, but you will have much more time to enjoy it if you stay for at least two nights.
A day trip gives you enough time for a walk through the village and perhaps one major mountain excursion. The problem is that you may spend much of your day watching the clock and catching trains.
Staying overnight means you can start early before the busiest period, enjoy the mountains during the day and then experience the village again in the quieter evening.
My tip: Grindelwald is one of those destinations where the evening is part of the experience. After the day-trippers leave, the village becomes calmer, the light changes across the mountains and you finally have time to stop and appreciate where you are.
Walking down Dorfstrasse and following the road from the railway station – just a few minutes walk – will bring you to some of the most beautiful areas, where you will find this “suspended moment of silence”. In my opinion, just walking around and enjoying the outdoors, is already worth calling the Swiss Alps the best traveling destination ever.
You will also find world-class shops and restaurants. I would recommend a lunchtime restaurant with an outside seating area with a view. After all, this is what you came for, right, and if you are spending on restaurant food, then you might as well, “make it worth the view”. LOL
