What does Lauterbrunnen mean?

Lauterbrunnen is a German word that translates to “loud fountain” in English.

The name is probably derived from the numerous waterfalls that cascade down the steep cliffs surrounding the valley, creating a picturesque and breathtaking landscape. The village is known for its natural beauty and serves as a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its stunning alpine scenery and outdoor recreational activities.

The Lauterbrunnen valley boasts with 72 waterfalls of which Staubbach Falls are the highest free-falling (almost 300 meters) waterfall in Europe.  Lauterbrunnen or “load fountains”, is exactly what you will experience when visiting the Trümmelbach Falls in the ‘Black Monk’ mountain.    When walking the “Wasserweg Trail” you will see some of the most beautiful waterfalls.  The waterfalls make for some of the best hiking trails in Switzerland with breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

Staubbach Falls, with a height of nearly 300 meters, drops into the Lütschine River and is located just above Lauterbrunnen village.
