Your Perfect Base for Exploring Somerset West

Tucked away in the charming town of Somerset West, the Lord Charles Hotel is a perfect blend of comfort, style, and local charm. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. The front desk staff made check-in effortless, and the porter went above and beyond, offering suggestions for must-see spots nearby, which made exploring the area even more enjoyable.

The moment you walk into the Lord Charles Hotel, you feel immediately at ease. There’s a feeling of calm, even when the hotel is bustling with arriving guests.

TRAVEL TIP:  Remember to take a scenic drive along one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful coastlines:  Clarence Drive rewards you with the most beautiful coastal views of False Bay, and you must stop at “Pit Stop” for a breakfast or coffee (especially if you have kids with you on the road trip).  An easy daytrip along Clarence Drive, would be to visit the lovely little coastal town of Kleinmond.

Somerset West has a perfect mix of relaxation, outdoor beauty, and local flavor, making it an easy place to enjoy a few days without rushing.  It’s not a tourist town, staged to look good for international visitors.  It’s a town where people live and work, but it has many beautiful adventures and places to explore, all mixed in daily life.

The Famous Duck Parade at Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Just a short drive from Somerset West, Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate puts on one of the most charming and unusual sights in the Western Cape. Each day, a flock of over a thousand Indian Runner ducks waddle across the estate lawns as they head off to work in the vineyards — helping keep pests under control in a natural way.

That “duck parade” draws visitors from near and far who come to see these upright, energetic birds march past with their caretakers.

The parade doesn’t last long, but it’s a delightful few minutes — especially for kids and anyone who loves quirky, memorable moments on a trip.  Beyond the ducks, the estate has wine tastings, markets on Saturdays, and opportunities to explore the vineyards and grounds at leisure.

Adding this stop to your Somerset West weekend gives you a taste of life on a working wine farm and a sweet, unexpected memory to take home.
