Lofoten - why you should go

Let's explore a few good reasons why you should visit

If there is one place in Norway that I will definitely recommend and that I am totally bonkers about, it is Lofoten.  It is simply one of the most beautiful places to visit in Norway and if ever you decide to chase the northern lights, this is the place to book your holiday.

Here you can experience a real polar night, see the magic of a beautiful starry night, and just stand in amazement at the beauty of nature.

When to visit

The jaw-dropping beautiful Lofoten Islands are one of my favorites and have a special “glow” during winter.  On some days the sun stays just-just below the horizon and it almost looks like a never-ending sunset. During the Polar Night time, Lofoten is beautiful with the night lights, mountains, and snow.

Well, actually Lofoten is beautiful any time of year.  It is just one of the most picturesque places in Norway.

So, I guess if you ask me “When is the best time to visit Lofoten?”  My answer would be:  “Anytime”.

Each season has its own mystique.  It’s own fabulousness, and it’s own character.  You can find something beautiful in every season in Lofoten.

Food

While you’re here, you should explore the charming fishing villages, such as Henningsvær and Reine, where you can find quaint restaurants serving fresh seafood. These villages also offer picturesque settings for enjoying a meal with a view.

Being surrounded by the sea, Lofoten offers an abundance of fresh fish. Make sure to try locally caught fish such as salmon, halibut, and herring. You can enjoy them grilled, baked, or even in fish soups and stews.

Try traditional Norwegian food like:

  • Klippfisk: Klippfisk is a traditional dish made with dried and salted codfish. The codfish is rehydrated and then cooked with potatoes, onions, and sometimes other vegetables. It is typically served with melted butter, bacon, or a creamy sauce. Klippfisk is a popular dish during holidays and special occasions.

  • Raspeballer: Raspeballer, also known as komle or klubb, is a traditional Norwegian dumpling made from grated potatoes, flour, and sometimes boiled and mashed potatoes. The mixture is formed into balls and boiled until cooked. Raspeballer is often served with salted meat, bacon, and a variety of sauces and accompaniments.

A recipe you might like to try at home is:  Norwegian Salmon

Things to do in Lofoten – All year round

  • Does Surfing in one of the coldest places, sound strange to you?  Well, it did to me.  The Unstad Arctic Surf Resort is the world’s northernmost surf resort.  You can surf here any time of the year and they do offer lessons for those trying it out for the first time. Furthermore, as part of the true Norwegian experience, they will provide you with high-quality wetsuits (so no excuses for the water being too cold).  Then after your surf session, you can jump in the hot tub or relax in the sauna.
  • Go horseback riding on the sandy beaches of Gimsøy Island at the highly recommended Hov Gård horse farm.
  • Watch the sea Eagles of Lofoten sore through the skies above the beautiful landscape.
  • Snowshoeing (as mentioned above)
  • Go Kayaking or go on an electric boat tour between the islands.
  • Book a Photography Tour.  Lofoten is a photographer’s dream any time of the year.  So come winter or summer, if you love photography, Lofoten will definitely not disappoint.
  • Learn all there is about the fascinating Vikings when you pay a visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum.  They are situated in Vikingveien 539, 8360 Bøstad, Norway.
