Dayan isn’t one monument that you walk around — the town itself is the attraction.
It is the simple pleasures of wandering through the cobbled lanes, crossing little stone bridges and following the waterways past traditional Naxi-style houses, that make it special. The old town’s water system is one of its defining features, and Dayan has been part of the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lijiang since 1997.
It’s famous for its well-preserved old town architecture, network of canals, and laid-back atmosphere. The town is centered around the Yuquan River, which splits into three waterways that flow throughout the town.
These canals are lined with traditional wooden houses and weeping willows, and many boast beautiful flowers growing along the banks. This is why Lijiang Old Town has earned the nickname “The Venice of the East”.

Dayan can become very busy around the main streets and Sifang Street. Early morning gives you a much quieter experience, while the evening brings the lanterns, flowers and lively atmosphere.
To truly appreciate the beauty and charm of Lijiang Old Town, you’ll want to allocate at least two to three days for your visit.
This timeframe allows you to leisurely explore the ancient streets, wander along the canals, visit cultural landmarks like the Mu Residence and the Wangu Tower, and perhaps even venture into the surrounding scenic areas such as the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Additionally, having a couple of days gives you the flexibility to soak in the laid-back atmosphere of the town without feeling rushed, ensuring a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
If I could share only one valuable travel tip for your visit to Dayan , I’d tell visitors to allow several hours, wear comfortable shoes, and deliberately leave the main street behind. Turn into the smaller lanes, stop at a café, look at the flowers, follow the water and simply enjoy the town.
