Is Szentendre really as pretty in real life as it looks in photographs? Having visited in May, I discovered that the answer is a little more complicated.
The Old Town is certainly charming, but the season can make quite a difference to the way Szentendre looks and feels.
Some of the photographs you see of Szentendre show a very colourful, almost storybook version of the town, with flowers, bright greenery and sunny streets. Our May visit looked a little different. Some trees were still quite bare and the town didn’t have quite the lush, colorful appearance I had expected from the photographs. Yes, we where blessed with soft rain on the day we decided to go explore.
However, that didn’t make it less enjoyable — it simply gave us a different Szentendre from the one we had imagined.
And perhaps that’s an important thing to know before you go.
Because once we started walking, we found plenty to enjoy. We discovered the famous umbrella street without even knowing it was there, wandered through the little streets, browsed the shops and made a special visit to the Christmas shop we had specifically come to see. There was the Danube, cafés, galleries and plenty of lovely little corners to photograph along the way.
So, is Szentendre worth the day trip from Budapest? From my experience, yes. Just don’t judge it entirely by photographs taken in another season. Come for the atmosphere, the wandering, the little discoveries and the chance to spend a few relaxed hours somewhere quite different from Budapest.
It is unique, charming, and definitely worth a visit.
Szentendre is a small town on the Danube, about 20 km north of Budapest, making it an easy day trip from the Hungarian capital.
The part most visitors come to explore is the Old Town, centred around the Main Square and spreading out through a maze of narrow, winding streets. This is where you’ll find the colourful buildings, little shops, cafés, galleries and many of the town’s most photogenic corners.
It is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot, and part of the fun is simply seeing where each little street leads.
If you’re driving to Szentendre, a good place to start is Lázár cár tér. Simply type these words into Google Maps and it will take you towards a small parking area close to the Danube River.
From here, you can leave your car behind and walk towards the Old Town, making this a convenient starting point for exploring Szentendre on foot.
As you start walking along the lanes towards the Old Town, you’ll soon be greeted by restaurants, a bakery and plenty of little souvenir shops. It’s a lovely introduction to Szentendre, with lots to catch your eye as you wander along.
Don’t rush this part. It is all about the discovery.
Then you gradually find yourself in the heart of Szentendre’s Old Town, where the lanes become more colourful and inviting. Take your time here — look into the little shops, admire the buildings and keep an eye out for the small details. There are plenty of corners that are easy to walk past if you’re only focused on getting to the Main Square.
Eventually, the lanes open up onto Fő tér, Szentendre’s Main Square, one of the prettiest spots in the Old Town.
The square is surrounded by colourful buildings, cafés, small shops and historic churches, with the distinctive Memorial Cross standing in the centre. Take a moment to look around before continuing your walk — this is one of those places where the charm is in the details.
From here, you can simply continue wandering through the surrounding lanes. This is also where you’ll start to see more of the artistic side of Szentendre, with galleries, ceramics and interesting little shops appearing around almost every corner.
As you wander away from the Main Square, keep your eyes open for the colourful umbrella street. We hadn’t actually known about it before our visit, so finding it was a lovely little surprise. It is one of those places you can easily come across while exploring the Old Town, and naturally, it makes a great spot for a few photographs.
One of the pleasures of wandering around Szentendre is the number of little independent shops you’ll come across.
You’ll find souvenirs, colourful decorations, handmade items and plenty of ceramics. Szentendre has a strong connection with pottery and artists, so if you enjoy browsing for something unusual to take home, allow yourself some time to look around.
You never quite know what you’ll find tucked away in the next little shop.
For most visitors, half a day is enough to get a good feel for Szentendre. The Old Town is compact, and you can wander through the streets, browse the little shops, stop for something to eat and take your time without needing to hurry.
I’d allow around 4–5 hours if you are visiting from Budapest. That gives you enough time to explore at a relaxed pace rather than simply arriving, taking a few photographs and leaving again. (Maybe allow an extra hour if you’re anything like me and want to explore each and every little shop.)
If you enjoy sitting at a café, shopping, visiting galleries or simply taking photographs, you could easily spend a full day here. An overnight stay is another option if you particularly like small towns and want to experience Szentendre at a quieter time after the day visitors have gone home.
For us, the pleasure was in wandering without a strict plan. Szentendre isn’t a place where you need to rush from one attraction to the next — give yourself time to look around and see what catches your eye.
TRAVEL TIP: The Old Town is small, so take a turn down a side street whenever something catches your eye. You may find a tiny shop, a quiet corner, a pretty doorway or a café that wasn’t on your original plan.
It has a creative, slightly bohemian personality. The town has long attracted artists, and that helps explain why you encounter galleries, studios, ceramics and quirky little shops alongside the more touristy souvenirs.
For a pleasant walk around Szentendre, late spring and early autumn are particularly good choices. May, when we visited, can be lovely for a day trip from Budapest, with comfortable temperatures for wandering through the Old Town and sitting outside at cafés. Summer brings warmer weather and more visitors, while September and October offer cooler days and the possibility of autumn colour.
December is a different experience altogether. If you’re visiting Szentendre specifically for the Christmas atmosphere and festive shopping, winter can be a wonderful time to see Szentendre in a completely different mood. Just remember that some attractions and businesses have shorter winter opening hours. (Many restaurants might be closed.)
For our visit, May was pleasant, but Szentendre didn’t quite look like some of the lush, colourful photographs we had seen. That’s worth keeping in mind when planning your trip — the season really can change the appearance and atmosphere of the town.
Szentendre is a lovely place to look for small, unusual souvenirs rather than the usual tourist trinkets.
Ceramics are a natural choice, with colourful handmade pottery and decorative pieces found in some of the town’s little shops. You may also come across embroidered items, Hungarian paprika and other food products, artwork, handmade jewellery and colourful decorations.
Hungarian textiles are another lovely souvenir to look out for, particularly colourful embroidered fabrics, table runners, kitchen towels and other traditional handmade pieces. They are easy to pack and can bring a little Hungarian colour into your home long after the holiday is over.
And if you visit around Christmas, leave some room in your suitcase — Szentendre’s Christmas shops are particularly tempting!
TRAVEL TIP: Wear comfortable shoes: The Old Town is best explored on foot, with cobbled streets and narrow lanes.
If you prefer to drive, Szentendre is about 20 km north of Budapest. The journey usually takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic. Having a car also gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding area.
For our visit, we parked near Lázár cár tér, which was a convenient starting point for walking into the Old Town.
TRAVEL TIP: If you’ve just arrived in Budapest and are planning your first day trip, Szentendre is a lovely place to enjoy your first taste of Hungarian bakery treats or café food. Take a seat, order something local and ease yourself into the flavours of Hungary.

Szentendre is a lovely place to slow down and enjoy a taste of Hungary. As you wander through the Old Town, you’ll find inviting cafés, bakeries and restaurants tucked along the narrow streets and around the pretty squares.
When visiting Szentendre, take a break, enjoy a coffee and perhaps try a traditional Hungarian pastry or a local dish.
And as you walk back to your parking, there are a few restaurants with views on the Danube. Slow down. Enjoy the moment. Because once you leave, you’ll want to come back…
Most visitors come to Szentendre as a day trip from Budapest, but staying overnight gives you a different experience. Once the day-trippers leave, the little streets and riverside areas become much quieter.
For a short stay, look for a small guesthouse, boutique hotel or apartment close to the Old Town. That way, you can walk everywhere and enjoy Szentendre at a slower pace.
Don’t expect every street to be picture-perfect. Szentendre’s appeal isn’t that every building looks like an Instagram photograph. Some parts feel really ordinary and that’s perfectly normal.
The town is particularly suited to people who enjoy little discoveries. Not “hidden gems” — just the pleasure of finding something you weren’t looking for.
