A beautiful place to visit in Tyrol: Vipiteno Sterzing Italy

Vipiteno (Sterzing) sits right at the northern edge of Italy, wrapped in Alpine scenery that feels fresh and uncluttered. The town lies in South Tyrol, close to the Austrian border, and that location shows in the neat streets, painted houses, and mountain views in every direction. Colorful façades line the pedestrian center, backed by steep green slopes and jagged peaks that stay snow-dusted well into spring. Life here moves at a comfortable pace, with cafés spilling onto small squares and walking paths starting almost from the town center. It’s the kind of place where you arrive for the scenery and stay longer than planned because everything feels easy, calm, and beautifully put together.

Looking at photos of the beautiful city of Vipiteno, Sterzing in the South of Tyrol, Italy you might think they are photoshopped, but they’re not.  It is really that beautiful.  The main street featuring the city emblem – the Torre delle Dodici, is simply beautiful and a famous tourist attraction.

Travel Tips (from locals)

Here are a few Vipiteno (Sterzing) travel tips locals quietly swear by, the kind you only pick up once you slow down and look around:

  1. Walk the old town early morning or after dinner.
The pedestrian street is calm before 9am and again after 7pm. Shop shutters are half-open, lights glow softly, and the mountains feel closer. Locals take their passeggiata then, not at midday.
  2. Skip the main cafés on the clock tower strip.
Turn into the small side lanes near the Zwölferturm. Family-run bakeries sell the same strudel and bread rolls at lower prices, often baked that morning.
  3. Use the train for day trips, not the car.
The Brenner railway line is reliable and scenic. Locals hop on the train to Bressanone (Brixen) or Brennero without worrying about parking or traffic.
  4. Eat earlier than you think.
Dinner starts early here, especially outside high season. Arrive between 6:00–6:30 pm for relaxed service and a quieter atmosphere.
  5. Head uphill, not out of town.
The best short walks start above Vipiteno rather than far away. Locals use the cable cars or forest paths just outside town for quick mountain air without committing to a full hike.
  6. Sunday afternoons are for nature, not shopping.
Most shops close. Locals picnic, walk, or sit at a café with one drink and a long view. Plan food shopping ahead.
  7. Order Südtirolean dishes by their German names.
Knödel, Schlutzkrapfen, and Kaiserschmarrn appear exactly as locals eat them, often better prepared than Italian-named alternatives.
