Take a road trip from South Africa’s Western Cape into the wide-open spaces of the Northern Cape and the West Coast – and you’ll arrive in one of the country’s most beautiful seasonal sights: The Namaqua Flowers (Namakwaland Blomme – in Afrikaans).
Each spring, the landscapes of Namaqualand (also spelled Namakwa) transform into carpets of wildflowers, stretching across hills, plains, and quiet country roads.
This is a journey made for slow driving and frequent stops. Bright daisies, vivid yellows, pinks, and oranges appear almost overnight after winter rains, turning an otherwise arid region into a natural flower garden.
A road trip to see the Namaqualand flowers is simple, affordable, and genuinely special — one of those rare moments when nature puts on a short-lived show that’s worth every kilometer.
The flowers in the Namaqua region (also called Namakwa or Namakwaland) usually start to bloom from late July and early August and last through September. Flower timing depends heavily on winter rainfall, so dates can change from year to year. In good seasons, a few late blooms can still be seen in October.
Flying in, to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) would be your nearest international airport. From here you can easily rent a car with one of the trusted and internationally known operators.

Travel time from Clanwilliam to the Biedouw Valley is 56 min (70,0 km) via R364.
Just about 65 km (around one hour) from Clanwilliam, the Biedouw Valley is widely regarded as one of the best places in South Africa to see spring wildflowers. After good winter rains, the valley bursts into color with spectacular carpets of daisies, vygies, gazanias and other indigenous blooms, making the scenic drive over Pakhuis Pass well worth the trip.

For a flower-filled road trip, visitors from Cape Town drive north on the N7 and the most popular flower route would look like this:
Cape Town → Langebaan → Clanwilliam → Garies → Kamieskroon → Namaqua National Park → Springbok
Langebaan isn’t actually part of Namaqualand, but it’s an excellent first overnight stop (or on your way back) if you’re taking a leisurely road trip up the West Coast. It lets you enjoy the lagoon and beaches before continuing north into the spectacular flower displays.
The best flower displays are usually seen from late August to early September, although the exact timing depends on winter rainfall. Midday, on a sunny day when the flowers are fully open, is generally the best time for viewing.

One of my favorite road trips is heading up the West Coast during the Namaqua flower season. I often recommend using Langebaan as an overnight stop.
