Hotel Lent in Maribor – A romantic Riverside Stay Along the Drava River

This review is not sponsored.

Sunset - Lent Maribor Slovenia

A Beautiful Arrival on the Banks of the Drava River

During our very first visit to Maribor in Slovenia, we stayed at Hotel Lent, located right on the shores of the Drava River.

Just as we arrived, the sun was setting. That gave us the perfect excuse to head straight for the river promenade. The sky turned soft shades of orange and pink while the water reflected the city lights.  A little while later it all changed to different shades of blue.  It was the perfect kind of beautiful moment that instantly tells you that you chose the right place to stay.

The front of the hotel is charming and full of character, sitting in a beautiful setting beside the river. Elegant bridges cross the water, swans glide slowly along the current, and a wide promenade invites you to take a relaxed evening walk.

A Peaceful Location Just Steps from the City

Location is one of the best things about staying here. Hotel Lent sits in the historic Lent district, yet the city centre of Maribor is only a few minutes away on foot.

It feels as though you’re far outside the city while sitting beside the river, but in reality everything is just a short walk away. Restaurants, shops and local cafés are scattered nearby.

At night we enjoyed walking through the quiet streets. Here and there a restaurant was still open and you could hear people laughing inside. The atmosphere felt relaxed and safe, making evening walks a real pleasure.

Interesting fact:  One of the first things we noticed, where some graffiti around the city. It was something we were not used to at first, but it forms part of the local character and gives the area its own personality.

Walking Distance to the Oldest Vine in the World

Hotel Lent is also close to one of Maribor’s most famous attractions, the Old Vine House.

Just a short walk along the river brings you to the legendary vine growing on the façade of the building. Known as the Old Vine, it is officially recognized as the oldest grapevine in the world and has been growing there for more than 400 years.

It is an easy stop while exploring the riverside district.

Dinner on the Riverside Terrace

A special moment celebrated with good food

One of the moments that really stuck with me was sitting outside for dinner on the terrace. As evening settled over the water and the lights of the bridges and walkways reflected on the river, everything felt quietly magical — simple, peaceful, and completely unforgettable.

Hotel Lent offers a relaxed on-site dining experience on site, with a view that’s hard to beat. We all had pasta for dinner, and it was delicious — fresh, comforting, and perfectly satisfying.

Sometimes the most memorable travel moments are the simple ones: good food, fresh air, and a beautiful view.

A Small Detail Worth Mentioning

Hotel Lent is a small boutique-style hotel with only about 15 rooms, which keeps the atmosphere quiet and personal compared with larger city hotels.

This, to me, is part of its charm.

why you should stay at Hotel Lent in Slovenia

Comfortable Rooms After a Long Day

The rooms at Hotel Lent were comfortable and practical. After a long day on the road, having a full bathroom was a welcome luxury.

TRAVEL TIP: Book a Room Facing the River

If possible, ask for a room with a view of the Drava River. The hotel sits directly along the riverbank, and the views include bridges, old towers, and the waterfront promenade. Early mornings and sunset are especially beautiful when the light reflects off the water.

The beds were comfortable and the reception staff friendly, making the hotel feel welcoming and relaxed.

Parking is available on site beneath an old bridge right next to the hotel. It can feel a little tight to navigate with a larger vehicle, but it’s a small inconvenience for a place that enjoys such a spectacular riverside setting.

Something unique

Walking beneath the huge bridges that span the Drava River gives Hotel Lent a setting that feels truly unique. The structure of the bridges rises high above the promenade, creating an almost dramatic backdrop as you stroll along the river. It is not something you experience at most hotels.

Breakfast and a Very Memorable Discovery

Breakfast was a standard continental spread with fruit, cereal, bread and other lovely options. It was more than enough to start the day.

However, one small surprise made breakfast memorable.

TRAVEL TIP:  “I discovered #Teekanne Mediterranean peach-flavored tea for the very first time!  Oh my word.  The flavor was light and fruity like real peaches, and refreshing — one of those unexpected travel discoveries you remember long after the trip.  (We don’t have this tea in our country.  Not yet anyway…LOL )  So, my travel tip would be for you to try new things.  Order something new on the menu, or try a new local tea that you haven’t tried yet…” – Elmari –

Travel Tip: Look Up Before You Leave

Before leaving Hotel Lent, take a moment to notice some of the small design details inside the hotel. In the dining room, the light fittings are made from dinner utensils — forks and spoons carefully arranged into creative lamps.

It’s a quirky little touch that adds personality to the space and shows how everyday objects can be turned into something decorative.

It’s also the kind of idea you could easily take home — a fun reminder that travel sometimes inspires small creative touches for your own home.

An Unexpected surprise

An unexpected surprise awaited us the next morning. Just a short walk from Hotel Lent, we stumbled upon the lively Maribor Central Market.

Suddenly the quiet riverside atmosphere turned into something wonderfully local. Stalls were filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, homemade honey, breads and local cheeses. Vendors chatted with regular customers while shoppers carried baskets filled with the morning’s purchases. It felt authentic and refreshingly unpolished, the kind of place where everyday life unfolds.

Markets like this are a joy to explore while traveling. You get to see what people really eat, smell freshly baked bread, and sometimes discover something you have never tasted before. It’s also a wonderful place to pick up fruit or pastries for a relaxed picnic later along the banks of the Drava River.

For visitors staying at Hotel Lent, this little market is an easy morning walk and a lovely way to begin the day before exploring more of Maribor.

It’s the Small Moments That Make Lent Special

Staying in the Lent district brings small moments that stay with you.

Stopping during a walk to watch swans drifting along the river.
Crossing a modern wooden bridge that looks like it was designed perfectly for the spot.
Sitting quietly beside the water as the lights reflect on the river.

There is a simple joy in experiencing a place like this.

Travel Tip: Summer Is Especially Lively

If you visit in summer, the Lent district becomes even more lively during the Lent Festival.

Music, street performances, and outdoor events take place along the riverfront, turning the area around the hotel into one big open-air celebration.

Even if you are not attending the events, the atmosphere in the evenings is wonderful.

A Practical Stop on a Road Trip

How long should you stay?

For travelers driving through Slovenia or exploring the region, the hotel works very well as a comfortable overnight stop.  However we would recommend staying more than just one night.

This was our stop on our way from Hungary to Austria, and we didn’t get to see everything on this one trip, so take some extra time to enjoy the setting and the city beyond.

Why We Recommend Hotel Lent

Hotel Lent offers something many city hotels cannot: a peaceful riverside setting while still being within easy walking distance of the center of Maribor.  Very few hotels in Maribor sit directly along the Drava River. Just step outside the door and you are already on one of the prettiest walking paths in the city.

Hotel Lent has a smaller, more relaxed feel than larger city hotels. Instead of busy lobbies and crowds, you get a quiet base in a historic riverside neighborhood.  I loved that it almost felt like a little secret hideaway.

Beautiful river views, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and the charm of the historic Lent district all come together here. It is the kind of place where simple moments — dinner on the terrace, an evening walk along the water, watching the swans — become the highlights of the trip.

A stay here leaves you with that childlike happiness of discovering a beautiful corner of Slovenia…and then you promise yourself – “One day I’ll come back…”
