Oysters

Oyster season

The oyster season deserves a mention on its own, simply because it is synonymous with this lovely coastal town.

Whenever there is a letter “R” in the month, it’s oyster time and well worth the drive to enjoy them fresh from the ocean.

The rule-of-thumb has one exception, namely rock oysters. They are available all year through.

Best time to go

You’re in for an enjoyable laid-back holiday, except over weekends when this little gem can become quite crowded.

July and August are usually the warmest months. For detailed weather and climate information all year round, you can go to the Weather Atlas.

Best day trip idea near Whitstable

Herne Bay is a quaint classical little seaside town. Travel time is around 14 minutes, one-way. It’s also a popular water sports holiday destination.

A famous landmark in Herne Bay is the mighty Reculver Towers dominating the coastline of Herne Bay.  Hundreds of years ago this site was used for defensive purposes.

Where to stay in Whitstable

It may be a small fisherman’s town, but there is no shortage of affordable, comfy, and beautiful places to stay.

Travel and Home’s choice recommendation is the beautiful Sea Sunset Cottage with uninterrupted and spectacular ocean views. Also, ocean views from all 3 bedrooms! It is the ultimate and deservedly our choice for the best place to stay in Whitstable. What’s more, it’s perfectly placed with only a 10-minute walk from the harbor. Thus an escape from the crowds, yet near enough.
