Chefchaouen is known as the “Blue City” of Morocco (or Chaouen). Founded in 1471 and located in the Chefchaouen mountains in the northwest of Morocco, this is a tourist must-see. The city’s photogenic charm, with its vibrant blue hues contrasting against the surrounding landscapes, makes it a favorite among travelers seeking picturesque locations to capture and share on social media. However, this doesn’t diminish the genuine beauty and cultural appeal that Chefchaouen offers to those who visit in person.
The blue city is filled with lots of beautifully decorated courtyards that are all perfect photo opportunities. I believe after taking a few photos you will say the words: “just one more”, quite a few times more… That is how it feels to walk through this city all painted in lovely shades of light blue. Remember to ask for permission before taking pictures of locals.
Getting lost in the small alleys is all part of the fun and exploration. Be prepared for a visually stunning experience, especially if you enjoy vibrant and charming settings.
Well, there are many theories, but it kind of remains a mystery. Legend has it that the blue symbolize the sky and heaven; to remind people to lead a spiritual life. However, according to the locals, it was simply painted blue to attract tourists. I think it was a very clever idea as tourists flock to this city. Undoubtedly if you ask the locals you will hear many more legends around this decision of paint color.
Apart from being known for the color blue, Chefchaouen is also a popular shopping destination. Here you can find many native hand-crafted items that are not available elsewhere in Morocco. Morocco cuisine needs no introduction, but do try the goats’ cheese which is native to this area. The Cheese salad that they make with the goats’ cheese, is really nice. Indulge in Moroccan cuisine at local eateries. Try traditional dishes like couscous, tagines, and mint tea.
As always, photo opportunities in foreign countries mean looking for the perfect Cat Photo… LOL
You can fly from Marrakech to Tangier, Tetouan or Fes.
While Arabic is the official language, many locals also speak Spanish and French. The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). It’s advisable to have some local currency for small purchases.
Chefchaouen’s markets are filled with handmade crafts, textiles, and unique souvenirs. Bargaining is common, so be prepared to negotiate when making purchases.
Respect local customs and traditions. The residents of Chefchaouen are known for their warmth, but it’s essential to be mindful of cultural differences and dress modestly, especially when exploring more traditional areas.
For female travelers in Morocco, it’s recommended to dress modestly by ensuring coverage of knees, shoulders, midriff, back, chest (and, in conservative areas, elbows and calves).
Chefchaouen is known for its friendly and welcoming locals, creating a positive and inclusive environment for visitors.
TRAVEL TIP: If you’re looking for a nice place to eat, try Restaurant Hicham. And if you’re looking for a place to stay with fabulous views over the blue city, try Dar Jasmine the 4-Star hotel up on the hill or the beautiful Dar Echchaouen Maison d’Hôtes & Riad. (see below for more ideas on where to stay.
TRAVEL TIP: For a comfortable exploration, remember the necessity of comfortable footwear for navigating the narrow and uneven streets of the medina.
The heart of Chefchaouen is its historic medina. Get lost in its narrow, winding streets, discover hidden gems, and interact with locals. Don’t hesitate to explore off-the-beaten path for a more authentic experience.
The term “medina” refers to the historical, often walled, city center in many North African and Middle Eastern cities, including Chefchaouen. Here are some key aspects of the medina:
The medina is typically the oldest part of the city, with a rich history that may span centuries.
Medinas are characterized by narrow and labyrinthine streets, making them easy to get lost in but also creating a charming and authentic atmosphere.
One of the central features of a medina is its marketplace or souk. These markets are vibrant spaces where locals and visitors can purchase a variety of goods, including spices, textiles, handicrafts, and traditional wares.
Many traditional crafts and artisanal activities are concentrated in the medina. Skilled artisans often work in small workshops, producing handmade goods that are reflective of the city’s cultural heritage.
Medinas are often popular attractions for tourists seeking an authentic cultural experience. Visitors can explore the narrow streets, shop in the markets, and appreciate the unique architecture.
In Chefchaouen, the medina is a central and enchanting part of the city, known for its blue-painted buildings, bustling markets, and a sense of timelessness that transports visitors to a bygone era.

DID YOU KNOW: The blue color is believed to symbolize the sky and heaven and is also thought to repel mosquitoes.
While not every single street is entirely blue, a significant portion of the medina and its winding alleyways is adorned with these distinctive blue hues, creating a captivating and unique visual experience for visitors.
Chefchaouen is one of the most touristy places in Morocco, but maybe due to the color blue… certain parts of the city are really calm and relaxing.
As you explore the narrow alleys and bustling marketplaces, you’ll encounter walls, doors, and windows painted in different hues of blue, contributing to the city’s distinct charm.
In specific areas, vibrant market goods with a burst of colors provide a delightful contrast, evoking a sense of joy and positivity.
