DID YOU KNOW:

The landscape around Göreme is volcanic.

Millions of years ago, large volcanoes in central Cappadocia erupted and covered the region with thick layers of ash and lava. Over time, the ash hardened into a soft rock called tuff. Wind, rain, and temperature changes slowly shaped this rock into the strange formations you see today.

That is why the area has:

  • Fairy chimneys – tall rock pillars formed by erosion
  • Cliff caves – easy to carve because the rock is soft
  • Underground rooms and homes – created by people centuries ago

This soft volcanic rock made it possible for locals to carve houses, churches, and today’s cave hotels directly into the hillsides. That is what gives Göreme its famous look.
