If you’re looking for an epic floral adventure, Nanyang absolutely needs to be on your travel bucket list! Trust me, your Insta feed will thank you! While Keukenhof showcases tulips predominantly, Nanyang spotlights diverse rose varieties.
Nanyang World Grand Rose Garden in Nanyang, China is THE most incredible place! Have you ever seen roses like this? Acre upon acre of blooms in every color imaginable – it’s like stepping into a living fairytale!
While China might be the birthplace of roses, the title of “world’s oldest living rose” goes to Germany! Apparently, there’s a 1,000-year-old rose chilling on a cathedral wall in Hildesheim. Wild, right?
But back to Nanyang! This rose garden is next-level. Imagine the Nanyang Rose Fair in late April/May – a sea of roses in full bloom, the air buzzing with fragrance, and all kinds of cool events happening. They even have themed gardens, a rose maze (talk about a challenge!), and a Moon Viewing Garden that’s pure magic at night. Seriously, it’s a rose lover’s paradise!
Did you know?
Fun fact: Did you know roses actually originated in China? That’s right, way before they were gracing European gardens, these beauties were thriving in Asia. Think about it, famous roses like the ones named after Mozart, Handel, even Princess Diana – all inspired by these Chinese originals!
Nanyang boasts a 2,000-year love affair with roses, and it’s not just your average romance. According to legend, a royal gentleman from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) was the first to cultivate roses in his Nanyang courtyard! Fast forward a few centuries, and by the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279), these beauties were blooming in everyday people’s gardens.
Over the years, Nanyang rose cultivation developed a unique style all its own. Think big, bold blooms with vibrant colors on strong stems. These aren’t your dainty tea party roses; these are Nanyang power roses! Nanyang has not only preserved many ancient rose varieties, but continues to cultivate this incredible floral heritage.
They don’t call Nanyang “China’s Rose Town” for nothing! This city is absolutely obsessed with roses, and for good reason. Nanyang has the perfect climate for these beauties to thrive – fertile soil, just the right amount of moisture, and plenty of rain. The result? Over 10 million rose bushes blanketing the city! Everywhere you look, there are roses – lining avenues, blooming in parks, gracing courtyards…it’s a rose extravaganza!
Boasting over 2,000 rose species, the air in Nanyang is constantly buzzing with the sweet scent of roses. And get this – their native roses are huge! Some blooms can reach up to 16 cm across, which is basically the size of a dinner plate! Imagine strolling through fragrant rose gardens filled with these giant blooms – pure magic, right? Nanyang is a must-visit for any true rose aficionado!

But Nanyang’s roses aren’t just about show. Their blooms are not only beautiful, they’re commercially successful too. Around 80% of roses sold in China and a whopping 70% of China’s rose exports come from Nanyang! So next time you get a stunning bouquet, there’s a good chance it started its life in this rose haven.
