Sangria’s story goes way back! Picture this: we’re in Spain, where the sun’s shining bright, and folks want something refreshing. Way back when, people used to mix water with wine because, you know, wine can be pretty strong on its own. But, that wasn’t super exciting.
So, clever folks started tossing in whatever fruit they had lying around to jazz it up a bit—citrus-like oranges and lemons, maybe even some apples to sweeten the deal. They’d add a bit of sweetness with sugar and then, for that extra kick, a splash of brandy.
Now, the name “sangria” comes from the Spanish word “sangre,” which means blood. Why? ‘Cause of that deep red color the wine gives when mixed with all those fruits. Kinda looks like a beautiful sunset in a glass!
Originally, sangria was a way to make not-so-great wine taste better, but it turned into this amazing, refreshing drink that’s loved all over the world. It’s a taste of Spain that’s made to be shared with friends, sipped on a warm day, or just enjoyed whenever you fancy something fruity and fun!
This recipe usually makes about 6 to 8 servings, depending on the size of the glasses you use and how much fruit you put into each glass. It’s perfect for sharing with friends or family at a gathering!
It’ll only take you around 10 to 15 minutes to prepare all the ingredients and mix them together in the pitcher. After that, you’ll want to let it chill in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavors mingle and get all tasty. So, in total, around 1 to 1.5 hours from start to sipping!
1 bottle of red wine (750 ml)
1/4 cup of brandy (60 ml)
2 tablespoons of sugar (30 ml)
1 orange
1 lemon
1 green apple
1 cinnamon stick (optional)
2 cups of chilled soda or sparkling water (480 ml)
Ice cubes
That’s it! You’ve got yourself a classic Spanish sangria ready to enjoy. ¡salud!
