When traveling by bus, you need an Ühiskaart: this is a smart card where you can load money to buy tickets. (Available in R-Kiosks). These cards work on the trams, buses and trolleybuses and when you leave Tallinn, you can return your card and get your deposit back. The tram and busses cover the whole of the city center.

What to expect

The Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik) is a pretty special place filled with museums, castles, beautiful churches, hilltop fortresses and in Tallinn, you’ll find the beautifully preserved ‘Old Town’.

In my opinion, the ‘Old Town’ in any European destination is always the part that draws me in. If the city has an “Old Town” I’m in: Ready to put my walking shoes on and explore.

And that is exactly what you must do. Put on your walking shoes and explore. The old town can easily be explored on foot. Book a few guided tours and emerge yourself in the history and beautiful architecture, as the historic old town of Tallinn is after all a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can also make use of the ‘hop on hop off busses available within the city.

However booking a guided tour gives you so much more info and insight into the history and legends of the city, that it is definitely worth your money.

Viru Gate – a historic landmark: Built in the 1300s, 2 large, ivy-covered watchtowers marking the entrance to Tallinn’s Old Town. Viru (also known as All-Linn) is one of Tallinn’s shopping streets and it is also one of the busiest and most famous tourist spots.
You’ll find the Tallinn City Museum at the Raekoda (Town Hall)
If you go in December, do stop at the Christmas Market on the Town Hall Square. Raekoja Plats in the heart of the Old City is also the perfect place to stop for lunch.
Toompea Hill: the Danish castle with stunning viewpoints over the city.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Mary’s Cathedral – Toomkirik (which is the oldest church in Tallinn) is also with a visit.
