Due to the presence of specific minerals and plankton, the sand at this beach has a pink hue. Recent scientific studies claim that foraminifera, a microscopic organism with a reddish-pink shell, is the source of the pink color. Coral, shells, and calcium carbonate are all mixed in the sand. There are very few pink sandy beaches around the globe. These beaches are uncommon, which adds to their allure and mystique in the eyes of people.

Getting There: The beach is on Harbour Island, which is accessible by ferry from downtown Nassau.

The Bahamas seldom drops below 20°C whilst July to September usually are the warmest months of the year.

With no shortage of stunning sightseeing, you have a fabulous variety of things to do. Like souvenir shopping in the small upscale Paradise Shopping Plaza or climbing the Queen’s Staircase. Another place to explore is the Cloisters, a picturesque destination home to 14th-century French monastery ruins.

Find your way to Bay Street where you can indulge in the many outdoor cafés, eateries, and pubs. You’ll also find the famous Straw Market on Bay Street.

An architectural marvel

The Queen’s Staircase is a major landmark in the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex, Nassau. (Address: 3MF6+GR6, Elisabeth Avenue).

It took six hundred slaves between 1793 and 1794 to carve (using pickaxes and hand tools) the staircase out of a single block of solid limestone rock to serve as an escape route from the fort above.

The Queen’s Staircase used to be known as “66 Steps” and was renamed to pay tribute to Queen Victoria who signed a declaration to abolish slavery in the British Empire.

Fort Charlotte

For beautiful views of Nassau Harbor, go to Fort Charlotte. The fort is from the British colonial era and sits on a hilltop with views of Nassau Harbor in the Bahamas. The cruise ship terminal and downtown Nassau are both only a short stroll to the west of the fort.

Travel Tip: It’s worth every dime to go on the sightseeing bus tour because this way you’ll get to see the inside of the fort and all the other landmarks that are worth seeing. That is, including the Queen’s Staircase.
