We often get asked if Sri Lanka is worth visiting. In our opinion, it is one of those rare places blessed with incredible natural beauty almost everywhere you go. The island is green, lush, and full of dramatic scenery, from palm-lined beaches to misty mountain landscapes. You will also find some wonderful places to stay, from peaceful jungle villas to beautiful beach resorts and tea-country hotels with spectacular views.
There is a lot to see and experience here. One day you can be watching trains winding through the hills near Ella, and the next you can be relaxing on tropical beaches or exploring busy local markets. It feels like a real culture trip filled with colour, flavour, train rides, temples, wildlife, and warm hospitality — the kind of journey people talk about for years afterwards.
Sri Lanka was previously known as Ceylon. The Portuguese called the island “Ceilão” in 1505, which later became “Ceylon” in English.
Today, officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, this island nation in South Asia is becoming more popular with travelers every year.
When you arrive in the city of Colombo, you are immediately welcomed by warm tropical air, busy streets, colourful tuk-tuks, and the feeling that an adventure is about to begin. Colombo is often the first stop for travelers arriving in Sri Lanka, and while many people move on quickly to the beaches or hill country, the city gives you a first glimpse into everyday life on the island.
You will find modern shopping malls standing next to colonial-era buildings, busy local markets filled with spices and fruit, and ocean views along the coastline. The atmosphere is lively and energetic, especially around the streets of Pettah and the seaside promenade at Galle Face Green where locals gather in the evenings to enjoy street food and sunsets over the Indian Ocean.
Most travellers spend one to three nights in Colombo before moving on to places like Kandy, Ella, or the southern beaches. Colombo is less about famous landmarks and more about experiencing modern Sri Lankan city life, food, shopping, and the atmosphere of the Indian Ocean coastline.
Sri Lanka offers warm tropical beach weather with sunshine, swaying coconut trees, and long relaxed days by the ocean. Yes, you will find all of that here.
Light clothing like shorts, summer dresses, and skirts are perfect for the coastal areas where the temperatures stay warm throughout the year.
But once you travel into the hill country around Ella, the climate changes noticeably. The mornings and evenings can become quite cool, especially after rain, so it is a good idea to pack a light jersey, jacket, or something warmer for layering.
Comfortable hiking shoes are highly recommended. Many of the most beautiful experiences in Sri Lanka include walking to viewpoints, waterfalls, tea plantations, and scenic trails through the hills.
Colombo city is a very busy city with lots of Tuk-Tuks everywhere. Even after sunset, the city is still crazy busy. It is noisy and loud and could be overwhelming.
But if you’re part of a tour group you can feel safe to not get lost in all the hustle and bustle. Also, you will know where to focus as there is a lot to take in.
For first time visitors: there are food stalls all along the promenade, right next to the sea – should you wish to get away from all the noise. As this is a big part of the Sri-Lankan culture, this is often also part of your tour.
The street markets and local fresh produce markets in Colombo are quite an experience. This is also the best place to buy your fruit for the day. The locals buy their daily food here, so the markets can get quite busy, but it is all part of the cultural experience.
If you love curry, Sri Lanka is famous for the best curries ever. So do try it while you’re there. Should you be traveling on your own, stop at the Z.A.N.D. Kitchen and bar situated right on the beach in Negombo. It is the best place to stop for food. You will find fresh fish caught on the day, to be widely available at the restaurants so any fish dish is certainly a winning choice.
If you go on a guided tour make sure the following places are included:
If you love hiking, this will be something for your travel bucket list.
Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is a spectacular ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. This massive column of rock, nearly 200 meters high, is a must-see in Sri Lanka. It might look impossible to climb from the first view but actually, you don’t have to be an experienced hiker or rock climber to concur this fortress. But bring comfortable hiking shoes and get ready for some steps as you will be climbing more than 1000 steps. (Just a note this is not for people with a serious fear of heights, believe me.) However, the views from the top are spectacular and you will not regret doing this hike. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that gives you that “I’m on top of the world” feeling.
A must-see while in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an awesome temple carved out of rock and is something you just cannot explain. It is situated in Kandy and is usually included in most Sri Lanka Tours.
This is a pretty town in the south of Sri Lanka. Unawatuna Beach is known for its palms and coral reefs. The Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery are also situated here.
This fortified old town, founded by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century is near Unawatuna. You will find many options on day tours to explore. The lighthouse of Galle is a famous photo spot.
This is the city to stay in when you visit Sri Lanka. It is green, beautiful, central and pretty. While you’re here, visit one of the National parks like Udawalawa or Yala National Park to see the awesome local wildlife. Also, include the ‘Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic‘ in your itinerary. Stroll along the scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is at the heart of the city. In my opinion, I would spend more time here than in Colombo.
For most travelers, 2 to 3 nights in Kandy is a very good amount of time.
That gives you enough time to enjoy the atmosphere without rushing through one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic hill-country cities.
Here’s what works well:
1 Night is good if: You are on a tight schedule,
You mainly want to see the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, or
You are using Kandy as a stop between Colombo and the tea country.
You can:
2 Nights — (Recommended)
You’ll have time to:
Kandy is not only about sightseeing.
The misty hills, tropical gardens, monkeys in the trees, and evening sounds around the lake make it a place to slow down a little.
3 Nights is perfect if you enjoy:
You can also do day trips to:
This gives you breathing space before continuing deeper into Sri Lanka’s hill country.
One thing many visitors don’t expect: Kandy can feel busy and chaotic in traffic around the center. The real magic often comes from staying slightly outside town in the hills, waking up to jungle sounds and layers of green mountains.
From Kandy take the train to Ella. This scenic train ride is definitely not the most glamorous of train rides in the world. However, it is worth it as your views of the ‘green jungle’ certainly make it one of the most beautiful rides ever. You will also see the beautiful tea plantations along the route.
Yes, some of the best tea in the world comes from Sri Lanka or Ceylon as you might know. The tea plantations, as I’ve mentioned are beautiful and you just have to stop for a special tea experience.
There are some Top Sri Lanka Culture, Coffee & Tea Tours you can book via Viator.
Many travellers discover that what looked easy on Google Maps becomes exhausting without local knowledge.
One of the biggest advantages of taking guided tours, is comfort. Instead of negotiating tuk-tuk prices, figuring out train schedules, or driving unfamiliar roads, you can travel in an air-conditioned vehicle while someone else handles the logistics. This becomes especially valuable when moving between places like Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and the south coast.
Sri Lanka is friendly and welcoming, but first-time travellers sometimes struggle with transport scams, inflated taxi prices, or confusing travel arrangements. Having a trusted driver-guide removes much of that uncertainty.
April to September and then again from November to March are the tourist seasons in Sri Lanka.
July to August is the festival season in Kandy. The Kataragama Perahera is a festival that coincides with the new Moon in the Esala month. This usually attracts a lot of travelers.
The festival runs for 15 days during the Esala month (July–August), concluding with the Esala Maha Perahera.
Sri Lanka itself is growing rapidly as a tourism destination, attracting record visitor numbers thanks to its beaches, tea country, wildlife safaris, scenic train rides, and tropical landscapes.
The Indian Ocean offers warm water and spectacular beaches to the South of Sri Lanka. You will find awesome sunsets in Sri Lanka, especially to the south. Spend your time snorkeling, swimming with the turtles, or just enjoying fabulous lazy days at the beach. Just keep in mind that some of the beaches have strong currents, so it is best to always swim near lifeguards.
The Ambuluwawa tower is definitely a must-see, must-visit destination in Sri Lanka. The views are simply spectacular, the architecture unique and the experience is something unusual and one of a kind.
Rising above the hills near Ambuluwawa Tower, Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex has become one of the most talked-about viewpoints in Sri Lanka. About 1,000 metres above sea level, this hilltop attraction draws visitors for one reason above all: the remarkable white spiral tower that twists skyward above forests, valleys, and distant mountain ranges. The climb is narrow, steep, and unforgettable, turning a simple viewpoint into a real adventure. On a clear day, the reward is extraordinary — wide-open views across the lush central highlands, with the kind of scenery that makes people stop, look, and stay a little longer.
A good Sri Lanka tour is not only about sightseeing. It gives travellers the freedom to relax and enjoy the beauty outside the window — green tea hills rolling into the distance, mist hanging over the mountains, roadside fruit stalls, wandering elephants, and sunsets over the Indian Ocean.
