Jasper is an alpine town in the province of Alberta in Canada.  Situated in the Jasper National Park, amidst the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is spectacular in natural beauty.  The park is famous for its glacier-fed lakes, rivers, and beautiful forests.  It is any nature photographers’ dream destination.

Here you will also find the impressive Mount Columbia, (an excellent ski location – 3747m ) the Maligne Canyon, and Lake (the lake is where you’ll find Spirit Island, a famous islet and photography spot).  Wildlife includes Canada’s grizzly and black bears, elks, wolverines, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats.

Best time to visit Jasper

If you’re looking for summer sunny days to explore and hike in nature, the best time to visit Jasper is between May and September.  With August and September being the months that traditionally have the least rainy days.

Is Jasper worth a visit?

This charming town with views of the mountains is definitely worth a visit.  Furthermore, the Jasper National Park is definitely worth a visit.

Another reason to visit Jasper.  Due to its limited light pollution, it has the perfect conditions for dark sky viewing.  (A Dark Sky Preserve as an area in which no artificial lighting is visible.)  Therefore the perfect stargazing location in Canada.

October is the ideal time to take advantage of these conditions with the annual Jasper Dark Sky Festival.  Creating excellent opportunities for night-sky photography.

Locomotive 6015 – Jasper

One of 16 mountain-type engines was built by the Canadian Locomotive Company of Kingston, Ontario in 1923.  This locomotive was used by Canadian National in fast freight and passenger service. (The Canadian version of the Orient Express around the rugged Canadian Rockies.)

How to get there

You can fly into Edmonton (YEG), Calgary (YYC), or Vancouver (YVR) international airports.  Then book your rental car and take the scenic drive to Jasper. 

Another way of getting to Jasper is to take the scenic Rocky Mountaineer or Via Rial train ride while you relax and enjoy some of Canada’s most beautiful scenery.
