Rio is Brazil’s second-largest city (after São Paulo), and it more than lives up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities on earth. In fact, it was the Portuguese navigators who gave it the name Rio de Janeiro – “River of January” – after mistaking its stunning bay for the mouth of a great river.
In my opinion, one of the real reasons to visit Rio de Janeiro is for the breathtaking views. Anywhere you go higher up, the city unfolds beneath you in a way that takes your breath away – beaches, mountains, ocean, and city all blending together. To capture the very best of it, here are the three most beautiful views in Rio de Janeiro.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS IN RIO !
The 38 m towering statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Mount Corcovado is something I cannot describe. Only when you stand there on top of the mountain do you realize the magnitude. Being the Top attraction in Rio de Janeiro, you must go early and I would strongly recommend buying your tickets online before going. It is jam-packed and very, very busy. But this is why you come. This is what you have to see and experience. Obviously, the views from here are awesome and if you’re looking for an Instagram photo hotspot – this is it.
THE CABLE CAR RIDE TO RIO’S MOST ICONIC VIEW !
The ride up Sugarloaf Mountain on the cable car is unforgettable. You float higher and higher above the city until suddenly Rio opens up below you. Beaches curve along the coast, mountains rise up behind, and the bay sparkles in the sunlight. This is one of the most iconic views in Rio de Janeiro.
TRAVEL TIP: Go in the late afternoon if you can – the golden light over the ocean makes it magical. It’s a must-see, and yes, bring your camera because every angle here looks like a postcard.
Pão de Açúcar or Sugarloaf is a mountain peak you can reach by means of a cable car and it is a popular tourist attraction. Tickets are sold at the station located at Praia Vermelha (Red Beach). If you keep in mind that more than a million tourists visit Sugarloaf every year, enjoying the breathtaking views, you will realize that you just have to be there early. It is a very popular and very busy tourist site. Rising 396 m (1,299 ft) above the harbor, Sugarloaf Mountain offers you stunningly beautiful panoramic views.
ADVENTURE WITH A VIEW THAT FEELS ENDLESS !
For a mix of beauty and adventure, this is the one. It’s a hike to get there, but the reward is the dramatic cliffside view overlooking wild beaches, lush green hills, and the ocean stretching to the horizon. The famous “hanging rock” photo spot makes it unforgettable.
The “hanging rock” illusion: Photos make it look like people are dangling over a deadly drop. In reality, just below the rock there’s a ledge of solid ground. The camera angle hides it, so you get that dramatic shot without the danger.
Adventure + reward: To reach it, you hike about an hour uphill through lush forest. It’s a bit of a workout, but the payoff is that incredible coastal view — green mountains, wild beaches, and the Atlantic stretching out forever.
Instagram hotspot: It’s become a must for travelers because of the unique photos. You see couples pretending to hang off, people “pushing” the rock, or just sitting on the edge looking out at the horizon.
So if you like adventure or you’re looking for the perfect Instagram spot – this is the place to visit.
Rio de Janeiro is a city that dazzles from every angle, especially when you take the time to see it from above. These three viewpoints alone are enough reason to put Rio on your travel list, but they’re only the beginning. The city is full of surprises, from beaches and neighborhoods to hidden corners waiting to be explored.
…and once you’ve enjoyed the views, you’ll find plenty more to fill your days in Rio –
Rio de Janeiro is known for its natural settings, so taking in the beautiful lagoon, beaches, and parks are all for free, but beautiful and well worth the trip.
In Rio, you will find the iconic beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. Both are very busy and popular beaches and Copacabana has a 2.5-mile beach with a walkway, lined with towering hotels and buildings on one side and the beautiful ocean on the other. However, Barra da Tijuca Beach (the longest beach) and Leblon beaches are also beautiful and just a bit quieter (yes only a little bit).
I think the best beach to visit is Arraial Do Cabo: A beautiful tropical beach with white sand and light blue clear water. This beach is just outside of Rio city, but definitely worth a visit: Especially if you book one of the boat tours to explore.
Find and book the perfect place to stay – the spot that’s just right for you.
