Take a road trip from South Africa’s Western Cape into the wide-open spaces of the Northern Cape and the West Coast – and you’ll arrive in one of the country’s most beautiful seasonal sights: The Namaqua Flowers (Namakwaland Blomme – in Afrikaans).
Each spring, the landscapes of Namaqualand (also spelled Namakwa) transform into carpets of wildflowers, stretching across hills, plains, and quiet country roads.
This is a journey made for slow driving and frequent stops. Bright daisies, vivid yellows, pinks, and oranges appear almost overnight after winter rains, turning an otherwise arid region into a natural flower garden.
A road trip to see the Namaqualand flowers is simple, affordable, and genuinely special — one of those rare moments when nature puts on a short-lived show that’s worth every kilometer.
The flowers in the Namaqua region (also called Namakwa or Namakwaland) usually start to bloom from late July and early August and last through September. Flower timing depends heavily on winter rainfall, so dates can change from year to year. In good seasons, a few late blooms can still be seen in October.
Flying in, to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) would be your nearest international airport. From here you can easily rent a car with one of the trusted and internationally known operators.
Following our itinerary below, we also give you a few tips on where to stay while doing your Namaqua Flowers Road Trip:
You can travel along the N7, North towards Piekenierskloof pass.
Here you will find lovely flower sports and while you are there, do enjoy an authentic Rooibos Tea: After all Clanwilliam is the home of the original and much loved, Rooibos.
Staying overnight in the Clanwilliam / Citrusdal area is a good idea.
This is definitely one of the most famous stops, to see spectacular carpets of flowers in bloom. Fabulous photo opportunities (so don't forget your camera, spare storage and chargers).
Along the way, you'll find more flowers. Traveling from the Biedouw Valley to Vanrhynsdorp is 1 hr 41 min (147,8 km) via R364 and N7.
You can travel all the way to Springbok - which is a 2 hr 24 min (259,3 km) via N7 trip and along the way you might also find some beautiful flower stops. (However this is a longer road trip and definitely not a day trip from Cape-Town.)
You can stop in Langebaan on your way back to Cape Town. The West Coast National Park is beautiful this time of the year and the Postberg Flower Reserve in Langebaan is definitely also a must-see place to stop for flowers.
(Part of the West Coast National Park) is not open to the public during the year, but they open to the public ONLY in flower season.
