Briançon is one of the highest cities (measured against other cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants) in Europe. It is situated at an altitude of 1,326 meters (4,350 feet). Topped by only Switzerland’s Davos at 1,560 m (5,120 ft) and
North Macedonia’s Kruševo at 1,350 m (4,430 ft).
The town is famous for its well-preserved Vauban fortifications, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. These were designed by the military engineer Vauban in the 17th century to protect the region.
The old town of Briançon, known as Cité Vauban, is a picturesque area with narrow, winding streets, colorful houses, and historic buildings. Highlights include the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame and Saint-Nicolas, and the Gargoyle Fountain.
Briançon is a gateway to the Serre Chevalier ski resort, one of the largest ski areas in Europe. In addition to skiing, visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing in the surrounding mountains.
It’s high altitude ensures excellent snow conditions throughout the winter season.
Skiing Opportunities: The town is part of the Serre Chevalier ski domain, which boasts over 250 kilometers (155 miles) of ski slopes. This domain includes varied terrain suitable for all levels of skiers, from beginners to experts.
Snow Reliability: Due to its altitude and favorable geographical location, Briançon typically enjoys abundant snowfall during the winter months. The ski season generally runs from December to April, providing ample time for skiing and snowboarding.
