When is the best time to hike Trolltunga

The best time to do the Trolltunga hike in Norway is typically during the late spring, summer, and early fall months. The recommended hiking season generally spans from mid-June to mid-September. Here’s why these months are ideal:

  • Weather: During this period, you can expect milder and more predictable weather conditions, with longer daylight hours. Snow and ice are less likely to obstruct the trail, making it safer and more accessible.

  • Scenery: Late spring and summer bring lush green landscapes, blooming wildflowers, and clear skies, enhancing the beauty of the hike and the views from Trolltunga.

  • Safety: Hiking in the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) can be riskier due to potential snow and ice on the trail.

  • Crowds: While summer can be popular, it’s when the trail is most accessible, so you’ll have more company. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider hiking in late June or early September.

Remember to check trail conditions, weather forecasts, and consider your own hiking experience and fitness level before embarking on this challenging trek. It’s also essential to book accommodations and permits well in advance if required, as Trolltunga’s popularity means that reservations can fill up quickly during the peak season.

Booking with a Tour group like GetYourGuide (a trusted company) makes your life much easier.  Guides often handle logistical details like transportation to the trailhead, permits, and accommodations, which can simplify your trip.

Emergency Preparedness:
  • Carry a first aid kit, a fully charged cell phone, and a power bank for emergencies. Know the emergency number in Norway, which is 112.
  • Download offline maps of the area before your hike using mapping apps like Google Maps or dedicated hiking apps. These can help you navigate even without a data connection.
  • If possible, hike with a group or at least one other person. It’s safer and more enjoyable to share the experience.
  • Begin your hike early in the day to ensure you have enough daylight hours to complete it safely.
  • Bring enough water and high-energy snacks to sustain you throughout the hike.
