Travel Bucket List: 10 Beautiful Places to Visit and Where to Stay

You don’t need a long list of countries to feel like you’ve travelled well. What stays with you are the moments — waking up to a view you didn’t expect, finding a small café with a perfect setting, or sitting somewhere so beautiful you don’t feel the need to rush anywhere else. This travel bucket list isn’t about ticking off places. It’s about choosing destinations that are worth slowing down for — and just as importantly, knowing where to stay so you can experience them properly.

Would you love to tick off some of these places on your own bucket list?

Before you start adding places to your own travel bucket list, it helps to know what makes a destination truly memorable.

The places we mention in this article were chosen for:

  1. their setting,
  2. their atmosphere,
  3. and the simple pleasure of spending time there.

We don’t just feature destinations — we focus on what makes them feel special, and where to stay to experience that fully.

Finding the perfect Destinations for all your upcoming vacations

In many of these bucket list destinations, staying overnight changes the experience completely.

Early mornings become quieter, evenings stretch a little longer, and you begin to see the place the way locals and returning visitors do.

Think of this list as inspiration for future trips. Some places are famous, others feel a little more tucked away. What they share is that feeling you get when you arrive and instantly know you made the right choice.

A little bit of extra..

We’re big fans of planning ahead and booking “things to do” in advance when mapping out our travel adventures. That’s why we’ve included links to fantastic activities offered by trusted operators. It’s a great way to spark ideas for your next journey.

So, let’s kickstart your future travel plans and start making some memories…

Our Favorite Bucket List Destinations—You’ll Want to Pack Your Bags Too

1. Maribor, Slovenia

Maribor feels easy and unpretentious, a place where you can step into a rhythm without even noticing.

The Drava River runs quietly through the city, and the bridges, squares, and tree-lined streets invite slow wandering rather than hurried sightseeing.

In the old town, cafés spill onto the sidewalks, and you find yourself lingering over a coffee or an ice cream simply because it feels right.

There’s a gentle energy here — not crowded or loud, just enough life to keep things interesting.

Stay a night, and Maribor begins to unfold differently: the lights on the river, the quiet hum of early morning streets, and the soft way the city moves between day and evening all become part of the memory you carry with you.

THINGS TO DO:  Go on a wine tasting tour and visit the oldest grapevine in the world.  Take a guided tour to Bled and Ljubljana.

At Travel and Home, we like to say: “Some places can’t be truly felt in a single day—if you don’t spend the night, you haven’t really been there.”

2. Hallstatt, Austria

Hallstatt is easy to misunderstand if you only pass through. During the day it fills up quickly, and it can feel smaller than you expected. But stay the night, and everything changes.

Early morning is when it reveals itself. The lake is still, the streets are quiet, and you can walk through the village without the rush of day visitors. You notice the reflections on the water, the soft light on the mountains, and the simple rhythm of a place that finally has space to breathe.

By evening, it settles again. The last boats leave, the noise fades, and what’s left is the feeling people travel far to find. This is not a place to rush — it’s one you stay for, even if just for a night.

3. Limone sul Garda, Italy

Limone sul Garda draws you in step by step.

You start near the water, then drift into the streets almost without noticing, pulled in by little displays of ceramics, colours, and things you didn’t plan to stop for. It’s not a place you rush through. You pause often — at a shop, at a corner, at a view that opens up between buildings.

Everything feels close together, almost tucked in. Give it a bit of time, and it starts to feel familiar, like somewhere you’ve been before, even if it’s your first visit.  It starts to feel like home…

THINGS TO DO AROUND LAKE GARDA:  Take a mini boat tour or do a castle boat tour.  A romantic sunset cruise is nice, or go on one of the popular food and wine tours.

4. Riva del Garda, Italy

Riva has a way of making you slow down without trying. You arrive, and instead of rushing to see anything, you find yourself standing still for a moment — looking out over the water, with mountains rising quietly behind it.

There’s space here. Space to walk without a plan, to sit a little longer than you meant to, to watch the lake change as the wind picks up in the afternoon.

“It feels easy to be here.” You don’t need to search for the best spot — it’s already around you.

5. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest reveals itself slowly. At first, it feels big — historic buildings, the river cutting the city in two…

But give it a little time, and the details start to settle in. A quiet coffee in the morning, the sound of trams passing, the way the city softens as the day goes on.

By evening, everything shifts. Lights come on across the Danube, and the whole city feels warmer, almost calmer. You find yourself walking without a plan, crossing a bridge just to see the view from the other side, or stopping somewhere simple because it feels right in the moment.

Stay a night or two, and it quietly becomes one of those places you don’t forget

THINGS TO DO:  Visit the thermal spa or go on a Tuk Tuk tour.  The most popular is to go on a Danube river cruise.  It’s always lovely.

6. Positano, Italy

Positano doesn’t reveal itself all at once. You catch glimpses of it first — pastel houses stacked along the cliff, a view that almost feels too perfect to be real.

Then you step into it, and everything becomes vertical. Steps instead of streets (many of them LOL), views around every corner, and the constant presence of the sea below.

You move slowly here, not by choice but because that’s how the place works. A short walk turns into a pause, then another, just to take it in. Balconies open out over the water, small cafés appear where you need them, and the whole town seems built around the idea of stopping for a moment.

Stay the night, and Positano softens. The day crowds fade, the lights come on across the hillside, and the sound of the sea becomes part of everything. It’s in those quieter hours that it feels most like itself.

THINGS TO DO:  Go on trips to Capri and the Blue Grotto.  Boat excursions and cooking classes are always popular.

7. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a place that shifts with the light. One moment you’re looking up at the Twelve Apostles, rugged and quiet above the coastline, and the next you’re driving with the ocean right beside you, the air clear and open. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a plan — just a direction.

Out at Cape Point, everything feels a little wilder. The wind, the waves, the sense that you’ve reached the edge of something. It’s not about ticking it off — it’s about standing there for a moment and taking it in.

And then there are the evenings. Find a spot along the coast, or somewhere high enough to see the horizon, and watch the sun drop slowly into the ocean. It happens every day, but it never feels the same twice.

THINGS TO DO:  Oh the list is long.  Go shark diving, take the cable car up Table Mountain for fabulous views, visit Cape Point and Camps Bay, the list is never ending…

8. Lofoten Islands, Norway

Lofoten Islands feel wide open in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re there.

Sharp peaks rise straight out of the sea, small fishing villages sit quietly along the water, and the weather shifts without warning. It’s not a place that tries to impress — it simply surrounds you.

There’s a quiet sense of wonder here. Not loud or dramatic, but something you notice in small moments — the way the light lingers on the mountains, how the water reflects everything back with perfect stillness, how far you can see without anything in the way. In winter, that feeling deepens. The landscape softens under snow, the days grow shorter, and everything slows to a pace that feels almost unfamiliar.

Stay a few nights, and that sense of wonder settles in. It’s not about finding something specific to do — it’s about being there long enough to feel it.

THINGS TO DO:  Go on the ultimate Aurora hunt and see the northern lights with professionals.  Or how about winter kayaking, summer tours and hiking in nature.

9. Leavenworth, Washington (at Christmas)

Leavenworth feels like it was made for Christmas Time.  (A true Hallmark-Christmas-Town.)

Snow settles on the rooftops, lights glow along every street, and the whole village takes on a quiet kind of magic as the day fades. It’s not just decorated for Christmas — it feels completely wrapped in it.

As evening comes, the lights become the experience. You walk slowly, almost without direction, past shop windows glowing warmly, with music drifting softly through the streets. It’s simple, but it stays with you.

Give this “Bavarian town” in the heart of Washington a night or two, and it stops feeling like a themed village — it starts to feel like a place you’re part of, even if just for a little while.

Leavenworth Christmas time of the year

THINGS TO DO:  Go on the Sip and Stroll historical wine tour.  Ultimately the Christmas Town Tour is a must during the festive season.

10. Malta

Malta feels alive in layers. The stone streets of Valletta, the tiny harbors, and the mix of old buildings with modern life give it a texture you notice the moment you arrive. There’s a rhythm here — mornings are warm and bright, afternoons glow under the sun on the water, and evenings draw you to quiet corners for a drink or a walk along the coast.

Stay a night or two, and the island begins to reveal itself beyond the obvious. Small alleys, hidden viewpoints, and unexpected glimpses of the sea become part of your own story.

THINGS TO DO:  Lagoon and cave tours, Valletta city tour, and foodie tour are all fun things to do.
