Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu – (in total 85 letters and known also as Te Taumata for short) – is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest place name. The place with the longest name in the world is situated in New Zealand.
Near Porangahau in Hawke’s Bay is an unassuming hill known for being the place with the longest name ever.
Now I don’t know about you, but I have tried and I simply gave up halfway in. How do you pronounce it? Let us give you a link to a fun way to learn the name: Click here but remember to come back to this page to discover a bit more…
This hill is known as “Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu“, which translates into English as “the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as ‘landeater’, played his flute to his loved one.” Locals simply call it Taumata Hill.
To locate the hill, head south from Waipukurau for approximately 55 kilometers, then make a right turn onto Wimbledon Road. Look for a sign with the name about five kilometers along this road.
The sign offers a fantastic chance for photos.
Keep in mind that the actual site itself is on private property, so make sure to obtain permission before walking there.
Pōrangahau, lies in the southernmost part of Hawke’s Bay, 45 kilometers south of Waipukurau, and close to the mouth of the Porangahau River.
While the primary attraction is the hill itself with its famously long name, the surrounding area offers some beautiful landscapes and attractions for travelers:
Waipukurau: The town of Waipukurau is a nearby center where you can find amenities, accommodation, and a taste of local life.
Hawke’s Bay Region: This region is known for its stunning vineyards, wineries, and orchards. If you enjoy wine tasting, Hawke’s Bay is a renowned wine-producing area.
Te Mata Peak: Not too far (1h 44 min by car) from Taumata Hill, lies Te Mata Peak another iconic landmark offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. It’s a great spot for hiking and taking in the scenery.
Napier: A bit further afield, but worth a visit, Napier is famous for its art deco architecture, vibrant arts scene, and coastal attractions.
Cape Kidnappers (yes that is the name of the place LOL): For nature enthusiasts, Cape Kidnappers is a must-visit. It’s known for its gannet colony and stunning coastal landscapes.
Remember to check for any specific access requirements or permissions needed to visit Taumata Hill, especially since it’s on private land. Enjoy your travels in this picturesque part of New Zealand!
