The reason why you have to go to Taormina

OK, so you’ve got the ‘travel guide to Taormina‘.  You have the facts on ‘how to get there’, ‘where to stay’, etc.  BUT  Why should you really go there?  Is Taormina really worth a visit?  Why add it to your travel itinerary? Let’s go!

Taormina why you should go hidden gems and secrets you must know before you go

This beautiful Sicilian town has been a popular tourist destination since Roman times.

A touch of history mixed with charm

Taormina is an absolute gem! Picture this: charming narrow streets, breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels like a warm hug. It’s like Italy turned the beauty dial up all the way to 100.

With an ancient Greek Theater perched on the hill, you get the sense of history surrounding you, yet it is hot and trendy.

Can you believe people were watching performances at the theater over 2,000 years ago?
Think about it – there was a person from way back when who laid each of those bricks, hands brushing against the same surface that you see stacked atop one another today. It’s like reaching through time and connecting with the hands that shaped the very structure standing before you.

You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine. And the backdrop of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, adds a touch of drama that even Hollywood would envy.

But it’s not all about history; there’s a lively energy in the air. The Piazza IX Aprile is the heart of Taormina, buzzing with cafes and shops. Grab a gelato, find a cozy spot, and just people-watch – it’s a sport here! Especially on a hot summer afternoon.

Piazza IX Aprile

Imagine stepping onto a black-and-white marble checkerboard, surrounded by the exquisite 17th-century facade of the Chiesa di San Giuseppe.

This charming scene unfolds in Piazza IX Aprile, Taormina’s most enchanting square.

As you stand there, the Mediterranean Sea sprawls out before you in a breathtaking panorama, adding an extra layer of magic to this already lovely space.

It’s not just a square; it’s a visual feast that captures the essence of Taormina’s beauty.  But it is at night that the square really comes to life… and well, it is a truly romantic spot for a fabulous photo…

And the food – oh my! From the aromatic aroma of freshly baked cannoli to the savory delights of Sicilian pasta dishes, your taste buds will thank you for this trip!

  • Back at the Piazza IX Aprile stop at the Bam Bar with its beautiful ceramic murals.  Sit for a while and taste their famous granita.

Where to find THE BEST Granita on a hot summer day

Oh, you’re in for a treat at Bam Bar! The granita there is practically legendary in Taormina. Picture this: a sun-drenched day, a bustling Piazza IX Aprile, and you, sitting at Bam Bar with a refreshing granita in hand. It’s not just a drink; it’s a ritual, a way of life in Sicily.

Now, when it comes to flavors, you’re spoiled for choice. The almond granita is a local favorite – it’s like a frozen sip of Sicilian sunshine. And, of course, there’s the classic lemon granita, zesty and perfectly balancing sweet and sour notes. But here’s a little secret: try the combination of almond and coffee – it’s a match made in granita heaven!

What sets Bam Bar apart is not just the incredible flavors but also the texture. It’s not too slushy, not too icy – just that perfect, smooth consistency that makes each spoonful a delight. And they’re generous with the portions, so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.

Now, finding a spot to sit might be a bit of a challenge because, believe me, everyone in Taormina knows about Bam Bar. But don’t worry, that’s part of the experience. Grab your granita, find a cozy corner, and just soak in the atmosphere. The vibrant energy of Piazza IX Aprile combined with the cool, refreshing goodness of Bam Bar’s granita – it’s a match made for a perfect Sicilian moment. Enjoy every sip!
