Looking for Family Fun things to do near Cape Town? Visit Mooiberge and go strawberry Picking in the Western Cape!
One of the best things to do during summertime is to go strawberry picking in the Western Cape. Kids love it, and parents (yes, even grandparents) can join in the fun.
When you mention strawberry picking in the Western Cape, two names immediately come to mind: Polkadraai and Mooiberge. Both places are very popular with locals, and at times, you might struggle to find parking, so be prepared. Summertime in the Western Cape is busy at all outdoor venues. Everyone gets out and about to enjoy the fabulous summer sunshine days that are unique to South Africa.
On this specific day our trip took us to this beautiful strawberry farm just outside of the beautiful Stellenbosch town:
We stopped for lunch, but for “dessert,” we decided to go strawberry picking. Yes, we were just adults, and yes, we enjoyed it just as much as the little kids—LOL. Everywhere, children and their families were busy with their annual harvest of ripe, red, delicious summer strawberries.
The fun part is that you can eat as much as you like while picking, so tasting and picking go hand in hand. I would, however, suggest coming earlier in the day, as the strawberries can get quite warm in the sun during the middle of summer.

NOW:
Now they have additional brand new seating areas where the kids can enjoy playing in a safe environment, with mom and dad nearby. It has truly become our favorite spot to return to year after year.
The name Mooiberge, in Afrikaans, means “Beautiful Mountains,” which is exactly what surrounds you—along with a wonderful view over the valley and strawberry fields.
Then there are the “inhabitants”: colorful scarecrows everywhere. You can’t miss them as you drive along the R44. In fact, Capetonians often refer to Mooiberge as “the strawberry farm with the scarecrows.”
The view from their restaurant is just lovely. You’ll want to spend some time here.
…and when you have a load full of strawberries left, why not make your own strawberry jam:Â Get our recipe >>>
Strawberry Picking time in the Western Cape
Mooiberge opens its gates for strawberry picking each year from September to January.Â
Outside of picking season, you can still soak in the stunning scenery and enjoy the fresh, delicious treats on offer. It’s a joyful experience and a truly beautiful spot—definitely worth a visit!
Mooiberge is a delightful escape where stunning mountain views, playful scarecrows, and sweet strawberries make every visit unforgettable.
Take the time to snap a few selfies with the scarecrows. Pause for a while and just admire the views. Fill your bucket with strawberries… and savor every bite!
But when visiting Stellenbosch, you can’t ignore a few other spots along the way. There’s so much more to explore…
While you’re in the Stellenbosch area, there are loads more places you can visit like “Oom Samie se winkel” in Stellenbosch town center (Uncle Sammy’s Shop). A lovely Victorian style shop with mementos from way back when… You’ll find a few treasures here. (Read more…)
After our strawberry picking adventure, we decided to take a gentle drive through Stellenbosch, along the Helshoogte—translated as “Hell’s Heights”—R310 road. Wow, what a beautiful pass! Built in 1854, it winds through the Stellenbosch Mountains, offering some of the most stunning scenery in the Cape, all the way to the little town of Pniël.
Along this road, you’ll find the turn-offs to Kylemore and Johannesdal.
In Pniël, we discovered the charming Pniël Congregational Church set against the backdrop of towering mountains—a definite photo stop. The town’s houses are surrounded by quaint flower gardens, and the locals were friendly and eager to share stories about their homes and church.
Past Pniël, you can head toward Franschhoek for more wine tasting or take the road to Paarl…also for wine tasting. Either way, a wine exploration awaits, and the choice is yours.
Combining luxury accommodation, fine dining, fabulous wine, a spa, iconic art treasures, and beautiful gardens, all in one, this is one of South Africa’s treasures. Watch Delaire Graff Estate’s intro video on their website, just to have a sneak peek at how beautiful it is. If you’re traveling to South Africa and you want to experience the “fine things in life”, stop at Delaire.
If you’re staying in a self-catering unit anywhere in Stellenbosch, stop here for some special treats for the night ahead. Spectacular views.Â
Book your farm stay or visit the Deli at the lovely Boschendal and have a family Rose Garden Picnic with picturesque mountain views. Explore the farm on horseback. You can also book an all-inclusive luxury tented camp experience. This accommodation offers fully serviced tents which are nestled between indigenous fynbos and olive trees. Guests can explore the farm and attend outdoor yoga, guided hikes, swimming as well as farm and vineyard tours.
