Rocket also known as Arugula  is used as a leaf vegetable for its fresh, tart, bitter, and peppery flavor.  For this reason it is the perfect ingredient for our favorite rocket salad recipe.

Obviously the main ingredient is rocket. Rocket originated in the Mediterranean region and is also known as Italian cress. The entire plant is edible, from the flowers to the seeds and the leaves. You can replace most types of lettuce with rocket or use it as a filler when you don’t have enough lettuce.

Also, rocket can be used in citrus salads. It does particularly well with citrus fruit and berry salads.

Another use is to make rocket pesto oil, losing the basil and adding pine nuts and parmesan for succulent results!

Our favorite Rocket Salad Recipe

COURSE: Side Dish, Salad

CUISINE: Mediterranean 




  • l Cucumber
  • 250 g Small Tomatoes
  • Soft Feta Cheese To taste. My family loves the soft Feta Cheese, so I am not shy to add a bit extra.
  • 1 bunch rocket
  • ½ Lemon Juice Or use pure bottled lemon juice
  • Maple Syrup Just a wee bit less than the amount of lemon juice


Slice the tomatoes, cucumber, and cheese to size.

Toss all the sliced ingredients, except the lemon juice and maple syrup, into a large salad bowl.

Drizzle the tossed salad with lemon juice and maple syrup.

You’re ready to serve!

Chef Secret!

For a more styled look, I like to plate the ingredients and garnish with drizzled lemon juice and maple syrup. This is particularly handy if someone has a dislike for any of the ingredients because they can dish only the bits they want!

Alternatively, rocket is also called:  Eruca ruchetta, rucola, rucoli, rugula, colewort, and roquette.

Rocket is native to Morocco, Portugal, Lebanon, Egypt, and Turkey.

Did you know:  Feta

I think many of you might say you’ve never eaten any sheep cheese.  Well, traditionally feta was produced using only sheep’s milk. Often a blend of sheep and goat’s milk were used.  So next time when you buy feta cheese, have a look at the label.  You might be surprised by the evidence in your hand.  I know in South Africa and some other countries feta is also made from cows’ milk.

Feta is also considered to be the healthy cheese option as it is a nutrient-rich option.

The Greek word feta (φέτα) comes from the Italian word fetta 'slice', which in turn is derived from the Latin word offa ("a morsel", "piece").

Did you know:  Maple Syrup

 “Maple trees are tapped by drilling holes into their trunks and collecting the sap, which is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup. Most trees can produce 20 to 60 liters (5 to 15 US gallons) of sap per season. Maple syrup is often used as a condiment for pancakes, waffles, French toastoatmeal or porridge” – Confirmed by Wikipedia

Other options should you not be able to use maple syrup:

Optionally you can make a vinaigrette for your salad.

In a small bowl, whisk 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard,3 tablespoons of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt together.  Add a little bit of pepper to taste.  While whisking, slowly add ½ cup of olive oil until the vinaigrette is emulsified.  You can add 1 teaspoon of freshly chopped garlic, but this is optional and according to taste.
