Travel Bucket List: Egypt’s Popular Pyramids Get A Revamp

Plan your trip around Egypt’s pyramids’ revamp project.

Yes, it’s true! 4,500 Years after the ancient Egyptian pharaohs built these fascinating masonry structures, access to see Egypt’s pyramids will be improved!

The project is aimed to improve the visitor’s experience of the Sphinx and the three pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu. The Pyramid of Khufu is the largest Egyptian pyramid.

Like many other attractions, this ancient historic site also received a knock in terms of tourism. Years of political unrest played a major part in reduced tourism to this spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site. Just as the industry started its recovering journey, COVID-19 struck. The expectation is that the changes to boost tourism will increase visits to Egypt’s pyramids above the 15-million mark.

Giza Plateau to get a facelift

The first-ever restaurant on Pyramid Plateau opened in October 2020! It’s all of 1,341 sq. m in size and mimics a traditional Bedouin camp in the desert. TravelBuddies can choose between eating in the traditional Bedouin-style, seated on scattered cushions, or opt for a table under the canopy.

And that’s not all. 2021 Will see the addition of 2 fine dining restaurants. The Northwestern side will also get a  café.

In addition to all the above, Egypt’s pyramids will get a new visitor center.

Also, TravelBuddies will get the use of an environmentally-friendly electric bus!

If you’ve been here, you will no doubt recall the locals’ adamant selling skills to make sure you walk away with souvenirs or go on one of the many camels around. Now Egypt hopes to tone down the atmosphere by introducing a new souk regulated by permit holders. This is set to happen in 2021.

So, if ever you wanted to visit Egypt’s pyramids, you can be happy you have not done so yet. But, now is the time to plan your trip!

Things to see at Egypt's' pyramids

Go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure.

Go on a camel-ride.

Although the Pyramids of Giza were constructed to last forever, climbing the pyramids is banned. It’s of utmost importance to preserve the pyramids and take care of our heritage.

Human plundering, and natural causes such as earthquakes, are the reason for only one ‘wonder’ of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world, still standing tall. Which is, of course, the Great Pyramid of Giza, at 139 meters in height.

How to get to the pyramids

Forget about trains and buses, they are not an option.

It’s about five hours flying time from most places in Europe to Cairo International Airport, in Heliopolis.

For instance, from Istanbul and Athens, it’s about two hours of flying. While Rome is about a 3-hour flight away, it’s much longer from Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.

The airtime is influenced by the number of stop-overs.  Flying direct from Rome, Paris, Athens, Istanbul, and London is also a good option subject to flight availability.

From Cairo’s International Airport, it’s about an hour’s drive to the pyramids.

Best time to visit the pyramids

Summer is in full swing during July and August. Usually, summer-time is a good time to travel, but there are two factors to consider when you plan your trip to the Giza pyramids. One is, accommodation and all other related tourist fees are at their highest during this time. Lastly, this time of year can be excruciating to travel the desert.

Therefore, we recommended to travel to, and see, the pyramids any time during the year except July and August.

Here’s a brief weather guide to help you decide when to visit the pyramids:

  • November to March 21°C – 26°C (70°F – 80°F). The night temperatures can drop quite a bit, so take a jacket or two. For instance, a drop to 10°C (50°F).
  • April and October around 26°C (80°F).
  • May to September can hover between 32°C (90°F) and 38°C (100°F), or even higher.

Is Cairo expensive?

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with this thought. It’s time to stop dreaming. Plan your trip with the travel tips we gave, and book your flight tickets to see this spectacular ancient wonder of all times!
