Japan can be expensive, especially for luxury accommodations, high-end dining, and bullet train travel. However, budget options like hostels, convenience store meals, and local trains make it more affordable. Many attractions are reasonably priced or free, so costs vary based on your travel choices.
Dining out can be pricey, especially in big cities. Lunch is usually cheaper, so cooking your own dinner and eating lunch out lets you enjoy both. Also, tipping is not a custom in Japan; waitstaff may be confused or even offended if you try to tip.
In Okinawa most people speak Japanese. However you will find that the staff at all the major hotels and popular tourist areas can all speak English.
