a Hallmark Christmas Town

A favorite memory for many visitors to Leavenworth during Christmas is standing in Front Street Park as the town’s dazzling Christmas lights come to life. The crowd cheers, carolers sing, and the gazebo glows with festive warmth. Snowflakes often drift down, adding to the magic as families sip hot cocoa and children sled nearby. It’s a moment that feels straight out of a holiday movie – one that stays with you long after the season ends.

best time to visit:

Not only a Winter Wonderland but a beautiful place to visit year-round.  No matter what time of year you visit Leavenworth, you will really enjoy your stay.  There are lots to see and do.  This is a year-round travel destination for the whole family.  It is really a Picture Perfect Postcard Town, but during Christmas it is especially beautiful.

A visit during Christmas time

Many travelers refer to Leavenworth as the Nr 1 Christmas Town in America:

Leavenworth during Christmas is pure magic. This charming Bavarian-style village transforms into a winter wonderland, with snow-capped rooftops, twinkling lights, and festive decorations everywhere you look.

Leavenworth Christmas time of the year

The Festhalle buzzes with holiday spirit, making it one of the highlights of Leavenworth’s Christmas celebrations.  Little corners where kids can write to Santa, decorations and celebrations…  Leavenworth’s Christmastown Gingerbread Contest at the Festhalle is a must-see during the holiday season! Creativity fills the air as stunning gingerbread masterpieces, from cozy cottages to elaborate castles, are proudly displayed. It’s a delightful event for all ages, with plenty of fun activities to enjoy alongside the contest.

Every winter, Leavenworth sparkles with over half a million lights, creating a dazzling display that runs daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, starting Thanksgiving and lasting through the end of February. The entire village glows, transforming the town into a radiant winter wonderland you won’t forget.

During Christmas, “the gazebo” in Leavenworth is the heart of the holiday magic. Surrounded by twinkling lights and festive decorations, it becomes a gathering spot filled with cheer. You’ll often find carolers singing classic holiday tunes, families snapping photos, and kids laughing as they sled down the nearby hill. With the towering Christmas tree nearby and the entire village glowing in the background, the gazebo is the place to soak in the joyful atmosphere of the season.

TRAVEL TIPS:  Arrive Early for Parking.  With so many visitors, parking can be a challenge. Arrive in town early to snag a good spot, or use the shuttle services available during peak weekends.

Things to do during the cold winter months:

Leavenworth is a treasure trove of activities during the cold winter days, making it perfect for embracing the season.

1. Stroll Through the Village: The town square is the heart of Leavenworth, and with snow-dusted Bavarian-style buildings and sparkling lights, it’s like walking into a fairytale. Grab a hot cocoa and explore the quaint shops selling everything from handmade ornaments to local crafts.

2. Go Sledding at Front Street Park: A simple joy for all ages, this small hill in the center of town offers free sledding and a great festive atmosphere.  The kids love this !

Travel Tip:

Do visit the Kris Kringl Christmas store on Front street for fabulous decorations and/or souvenirs.  Did you know:  Kris Kringl is the US name for Father Christmas.

Where to eat:

In the same street, you can stop for dinner at Andreas Keller Restaurant for really good food.  Our recommendation would be to go to a place selling authentic German food.

Warm Up with German Comfort Food: Treat yourself to hearty Bavarian dishes like schnitzel, bratwurst, and pretzels at local favorites like Andreas Keller or Munchen Haus. Don’t forget to try a stein of locally brewed beer or a glass of glühwein.

HELPFUL TRAVEL TIP:  Make Dinner Reservations before you go.  Restaurants get busy during the holidays. Call ahead to reserve a table at popular spots like Andreas Keller or South for a stress-free dining experience.

If you don’t, remember:  Popular restaurants will have long waits during peak hours. Consider dining at odd times or grabbing takeout from food trucks or bakeries to save time.
