If you’re looking for Austria’s beauty without the crowds, this hidden corner of Carinthia might just become your favorite place too.
Lake Ossiach, with a shore length of 25 km, is famous for being the third-largest lake in the Austrian state of Carinthia. This unbelievably beautiful lake spreads across 10.5 km² and is superseded by Lake Wörth (17.64 km²) and Lake Millstatt (13.3 km²), in terms of size. Together, the three main lakes are known as the “Carinthian Riviera”

If you’re planning a trip to Lake Ossiach, the honest answer is three full days. That means three mornings waking up here and three evenings going to bed here — not counting your arrival or departure days. With three days, you can enjoy the lake properly without rushing from one activity to the next.
Day 1 is perfect for settling in, swimming, relaxing on the lakeshore, or enjoying your hotel’s private beach.
Day 2 gives you time for one of the bigger experiences — like heading up Gerlitzen Alpe, taking a boat cruise, or exploring the Domenig Steinhaus.
Day 3 lets you slow down again or visit nearby Villach or Klagenfurt without feeling squeezed for time.
If you only have two full days, you can still enjoy the lake, but you’ll need to choose your activities more carefully. And if you love slow travel, four to five days is a lovely stretch — especially if you want to explore more of Carinthia’s “Land of Lakes.”

Go in summer — June to early September. That’s when Lake Ossiach is at its best for tourists. The water is warm enough for swimming, the weather is reliably sunny, and all the lakeside activities, boat rides, and mountain lifts are running. It’s the season when the lake feels alive.
If you prefer quieter travel, I recommend late May or mid‑September, which is perfect for calm, crowd‑free days while still warm enough to enjoy the lake and the walking paths.
Winter is beautiful but not “lake‑holiday” weather. It’s more for skiing on Gerlitzen than for enjoying the lake itself.

Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is 57 km from the lake. Generally, the least stressful way to get to Lake Ossiach is to fly in and hire a car.
Alternatively, take a bus from the airport to Villach. It’s about a ten-minute walk to the bus terminal, namely Klagenfurt Annabichl Bahnhof, which will take you to Villach Hbf, and ultimately to St. Urban/Ossiachersee Bahnhof. Thereafter, you have a further 3-minute walk before you’re at Lake Ossiach.
Lastly, (and more convenient than the bus) there is a train option from Klagenfurt Hbf to Ossiach-Bodensdorf Bahnhof. The train trip has one change and lasts about 50 minutes.
