Origins and Geography of Lake Garda

The meaning of Garda is “place of guard/safety/observation”, originating from the Germanic word “warda”.

This alpine region was formed by glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age and is between Venice and Milan on the edge of the Dolomites.

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It spans about 370 square kilometers (143 square miles) and stretches through the provinces of Verona, Brescia, and Trento. Its vast size and diverse landscape contribute to its popularity and appeal.
