By now you know that I support a culture of paying it forward, and so it should be no surprise that I write about Ladles of Love, a project in Cape Town, South Africa.Â
Ladles of Love is a non-profit project, founded by Danny Diliberto, serving the homeless in Cape Town since July 2014. What started out small, is now a significant project serving balanced and nutritional meals to the needy.Â
They run several kitchens (click for locations and times) and rely on volunteers to help. As at May 2020 the Cape Town International Convention Centre serves as the base for Ladles of Love providing an exhibition hall and kitchen to prepare, package and send food parcels off to various points around Cape Town. All you need to do is show up and help. That simple.Â
“Change has become the only constant here. I’ve never experienced anything like this. The operation has exploded almost overnight – I look around this enormous depot filled with volunteers and food and it makes me quite emotional – I can’t believe this is the same little soup kitchen I was running just 5 weeks ago.
Making plans is impossible – even planning for tomorrow doesn’t work, because by the time you get there everything is different. We’ve learned to roll with the punches, to adapt in order to thrive. COVID19 has taught me the power of the present moment and the importance of gratitude – the amazing thing is that everything we need is coming to us as we need it. I’m witnessing humanity in action every day here, I see people that never met before working together, I see kindness like you can’t imagine. Everyone is here for one purpose only – to help other Capetonians in need. It’s beautiful.
When I get home at night, I imagine what it would be like to be coming home to an empty kitchen. To have no food and no idea where the next meal is coming from. It’s terrifying. That’s what keeps me going, that thought. Nobody deserves to feel like that – nobody deserves to be hungry. When I’m tired and exhausted and I’ve only slept 4 hours, that’s what pulls me out of bed in the morning. COVID19 has only made me MORE determined to feed as many people as I possibly can.”
