Kaysersberg one of the most beautiful villages in France what to expect

Visit Kaysersberg in France

Kaysersberg-Vignoble (previously known as just Kaysersberg) is located in the very beautiful Alsace region of France.

This picturesque village lies at the foot of the Vosges Mountains.

As Kaysersberg is on the border of both Germany and Switzerland, travelers often gets confused as to where exactly they are, as the influence of both these countries can be seen in the village.  Colorful buildings and pretty architecture certainly helped this fairy-tale village to be named “France’s favorite village” in 2017.

Best time of year to visit Kaysersberg

Spring and early fall bring mild weather and fewer crowds. Winter is magical during Christmas markets, but expect chilly temperatures. Summer is lively but busy.

  • Spring: March to May – mild temperatures, flowers starting to bloom, perfect for strolling the village and vineyards.

  • Fall (Autumn): September to November – cooler weather, harvest season, and colorful vineyard landscapes.

The peak of autumn colors is usually late September to mid-October, which is fantastic for photos along the wine route.

What to expect:

Kaysersberg is nestled in a picture-perfect setting, surrounded by rolling vineyards, lush forests, and the gentle slopes of the Vosges Mountains.

The countryside invites exploration, with hiking trails that wind through the vines and offer sweeping views of the village and surrounding hills. In winter, the nearby mountains become a playground for skiing and snowboarding, while the vineyards provide a serene backdrop year-round, especially during the harvest season.

Strolling through the village, you’ll feel the balance of nature and history, with charming streets, local cafés, and the promise of quiet moments among the vines.

Kaysersberg home

DID YOU KNOW:  There’s a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The village was an important trading center and was once home to a castle that was built in the 13th century. Today, the castle ruins offer panoramic views of the village and the surrounding countryside.

Kaysersberg is known for

…its stunning architecture, which features half-timbered houses, narrow streets, and colorful flowers that adorn the windowsills. The village has been well-preserved, and walking through the streets feels like stepping back in time.

How much time do I need?

Can I do a day trip?

You can easily stay in Colmar (also one of the most beautiful villages in France) and then do a daytrip to Kaysersberg as an afternoon in Kaysersberg should be enough time.

Unless you are like us and love wondering up and down and taking in each bit of scenery and enjoying the food and wine of the region, then you need a whole day.

Here’s what makes it special:

  • Built in the 14th century, it originally served both as a crossing and a defensive point to protect the village.

  • The bridge has a small gatehouse and a few remnants of battlements, giving it that classic “fairytale fortress” look.

  • From the bridge, you get picturesque views of the timber-framed houses lining the river — one of the most photographed spots in Kaysersberg.
