What you need to know about the Kanonkop Trail in Cape Town

The Kanonkop Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Cape Town. Like the Cape Point Trail, it lies within a protected area that falls under South Africa’s Table Mountain National Park. Table Mountain National Park is part of South Africa’s national park system.

The Kanonkop trail, which is a 4 to 5-hour circular route departing from the Buffelsfontein visitor center within the Cape Point Nature Reserve, is one of the most popular among Cape Point hiking enthusiasts. 

Named after the old canon located at its peak, the Kanonkop trail provides impressive views over False Bay, Cape Point, Buffels Bay Beach, and the prominent Da Gama monument, and it also passes an interesting old lime kiln along the way.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it is also a nice route with a gentle ascent to the cannons and subsequent descent to the coast. The trail offers magnificent views of the coast and the park.

  • The trail starts at the Buffelsfontein visitors center near Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.
  • While you’re at it, the Buffelsfontein Visitors Center is worth a visit because it’s a source of information about the history of the Cape Point Nature Reserve and the local flora and fauna. A nearby viewing spot overlooks a stream where wildlife often comes to drink.
  • There is a short section on a tar road, but otherwise, you can expect to walk mainly on a single sand track.
  • Although it is a popular trail, hiking at quieter times of the day offers plenty of opportunities for solitude.

Remember to carry at least two liters of water and some high-energy snacks.
