A simple recipe for traditional Kaiser rolls that's suitable for beginners

Easy Kaiser Roll Recipe:

The Kaiser roll, also known as “Kaisersemmel” or “Emperor rolls,”  has historical ties to Austria, as it is believed that Kaiser rolls were created in Vienna, Austria, in the late 17th century to celebrate Emperor Franz Joseph I. The distinctive shape, with a series of folds or points, is said to represent the Emperor’s crown.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • How to Activate the Yeast

Start by activating the yeast as follow:

    • In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
    • Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture (that you’ve activated) and vegetable oil.
    • Gradually incorporate the flour into the wet ingredients until a dough forms. 
    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
    • Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
    • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a round ball.
    • Place the shaped rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them.
    • Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  • Baking the Kaiser Rolls:

    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
    • Optionally, slash a cross or a star shape on top of each roll with a sharp knife.
    • Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
    • Allow the Kaiser rolls to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Over time, the Kaiser roll gained popularity not only in Austria but also in other European countries. It became a staple in German bakeries and is commonly found in many parts of Europe.
