The goodness of Home-Made :  This recipe is easy for beginners.

MIXED BERRY JAM RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 500 g frozen berry mix / summer fruit mix
  • 500 g white sugar
  • 1 large lemon

Instructions

  1. Use equal amounts of fruit and sugar.

For 500g fruit + 500g sugar, add the juice of 1 large lemon

  2. Place a saucer in the freezer before you start.
  3. Simmer the fruit (on the stovetop) for about 3 minutes and add the lemon juice.
  4. Depending on how you like it, you can now crush the fruit or finely mash them.
  5. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved (on medium heat – not too hot)
  6. Boil for another 4 minutes over high heat – stirring regularly.

To test if your jam is ready:

  • When ready place a spoonful of jam on the plate from the freezer.
  • Let cool for 4 seconds.
  • Push your finger through the jam.
  • If the skin on top forms a wrinkle, it is cooked.

How to bottle jam

Make sure the glass containers are thoroughly washed and rinsed.

Just before use, put them (as well as the lids) in boiling hot water. – You should only use the proper ‘canning’ or ‘honey’ glass jars.  Do not use glass jars with plastic lids. –   I only take them out, when I am ready to pour the jam in.

After filling them, make sure the lid seals 100%.  Wipe clean and turn them upside down.  Let cool like that.

Cost Saving:

Glass containers can be expensive.  If you are looking to save money, save those glass jars from your mayo or gurkins, etc..  They can handle the heat.
