Known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, Ishigaki is perfect for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park lies the Shiraho Reef’s rare blue coral.
It’s part of the Yaeyama Islands and offers a more laid-back vibe compared to Okinawa.
Frequent flights connect Naha Airport to New Ishigaki Airport. You can also fly directly from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Ishigaki Island, with the journey taking around 3 hours.
Another fantastic spot for beach lovers, Miyako Island boasts stunning sandy shores and excellent snorkeling spots. The island is also known for its scenic bridges connecting neighboring islands, providing picturesque views.
The Irabu Bridge, connecting Miyako Island and Irabu Island, is a stunning feat of engineering and a must-see landmark. (Spanning approximately 3,540 meters.)
There are direct flights from major Japanese cities like Tokyo (Haneda Airport and Narita Airport), Osaka (Kansai International Airport), and Naha (Okinawa’s main airport) to Miyako Airport (MMY). The flight from Naha takes about an hour, while flights from Tokyo and Osaka typically take around 3 hours.
Famous for its traditional Ryukyu-style houses and pristine beaches, Taketomi offers a glimpse into traditional Okinawan life. Visitors can explore the small island by bicycle and enjoy its unique charm.
If you’re coming from Okinawa’s main island, you can take a ferry from Ishigaki Port. There are several ferry services available, but they typically require a transfer at Ishigaki Island before reaching Taketomi. Taketomi Island is relatively small and best explored on foot or by bicycle. You can rent bicycles near the port area or at various rental shops on the island.
Kume is renowned for its historic sites and natural beauty. Highlights include the Hatenohama Sandbar, which is one of the most beautiful sandbars in Japan, and Uezu House, a preserved samurai residence.
Kume Island is accessible by air from Naha Airport. Several daily flights operated by local airlines like Japan Transocean Air (JTA) and Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC) connect Naha to Kume Island Airport (UEO). The flight duration is approximately 35 to 40 minutes.
Known for its dense jungles and rich biodiversity, Iriomote is ideal for adventure seekers. Activities like jungle trekking, kayaking, and exploring waterfalls are popular here.
The most common way to reach Iriomote Island is by ferry from Ishigaki Island. Ferries depart multiple times a day from Ishigaki Port to Ohara Port on Iriomote Island. The journey takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes.
HELPFUL TRAVEL TIP: It’s advisable to check the ferry schedule in advance and arrive at the port early, especially during peak travel seasons.
From the tranquil beaches of Miyako to the untamed jungles of Iriomote, the islands near Okinawa offer a treasure trove of experiences for every traveler. These hidden gems are just a hop away and promise to enrich your journey with their unique beauty and charm.
