Sveti Stefan: Unveiling the Hidden Gem of the Adriatic Coast

Sveti Stefan Island is a tiny, picturesque islet located in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Montenegro. This island is like a real-life fairytale with its medieval charm and stunning views. It’s known as the poster child of Montenegrin luxury tourism. I’m excited to share a travel guide with you!

Sveti Stefan Island, Montenegro

Getting There

To reach Sveti Stefan Island, you can start by flying into Tivat Airport, which is the closest international airport. From there, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach the island. The drive is quite scenic, and you’ll enjoy beautiful coastal views along the way.

History

Sveti Stefan has a fascinating history. It was originally a fishing village, and in the 15th century, it became a fortified island to protect against pirates. The island was later turned into an exclusive hotel in the 1960s, hosting many famous guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.

Accommodation

One of the most unique features of Sveti Stefan is the Aman Sveti Stefan Resort, which occupies the entire island. It’s a luxurious hotel that has preserved the island’s medieval charm. The rooms are located in charming stone cottages with terracotta roofs, and the views are just incredible. If you’re looking for a special place to stay, this WAS it! Unfortunately, due to a dispute with the Montenegro Government, the resort closed its doors. Hopefully only temporary.  The good news is that there are superb alternatives – have a look…

Exploring the Island

The island itself is a marvel. You can’t help but be enchanted by the narrow stone streets, quaint houses, and charming courtyards. Don’t miss the lovely Church of Sveti Stefan, which dates back to the 14th century. Even if you’re not staying at the resort, you can explore the island and enjoy its beauty.
