I recently stumbled upon an absolute gem of a destination that I simply cannot keep to myself any longer. Get ready to pack your bags and join me as I take you on a virtual journey to the enchanting town of Giovinazzo in the stunning region of Puglia, Italy.
And wait! I’m also super excited to share my travel tips for escaping the crowds. Giovinazzo is much quieter than Santorini, but I have a few great tips to help you find even more peaceful spots!
Both Giovinazzo and Santorini are stunning vacation destinations with plenty of stunning scenery, but they offer different experiences. Let’s see which destination you prefer…

So there you have it. Furthermore, may I add that Giovinazzo is also much less crowded than iconic destinations such as nearby Alberobello (about 81 km away) or Polignano a Mare (about 60 km away) – both perfect day trips!

Giovinazzo is the kind of place that feels like it was plucked straight out of a fairy tale. Nestled along the Adriatic Sea, this hidden holiday destination is a true delight for anyone seeking a serene escape from the bustling crowds.
One of the first things that struck me about Giovinazzo was its rich history. As I wandered through the town’s narrow alleyways, I couldn’t help but marvel at the well-preserved medieval walls and ancient architecture that seemed to whisper stories of days gone by. The impressive Castello Normanno-Svevo, a majestic castle dating back to the 12th century, stands proudly at the heart of the town, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding area.
One of my favorite pastimes in Giovinazzo was simply strolling along the waterfront promenade, taking in the picturesque scenery and basking in the warm Mediterranean sun. The harbor is dotted with colorful fishing boats and small cafes, where you can sit back, relax, and savor the catch of the day. Trust me, the seafood here is absolutely divine!
Another thing I did was go on a private tour of Giovinazzo. So I got the most out of this little hidden gem! There is no way I would have known the amazing history of the town without our knowledgeable and friendly guide.
You’ll find the Cathedral in the heart of the historic center, near the main square. As you approach, you’ll be captivated by its impressive façade, adorned with intricate stonework and a magnificent rose window. The cathedral’s construction dates back to the 12th century, although it has undergone various modifications and additions over the centuries.
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking interior that seamlessly blends different architectural styles. The cathedral features a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements, showcasing the evolution of artistic influences throughout the ages. As you explore the nave, you’ll come across ornate chapels, intricately carved wooden altars, and stunning frescoes that depict biblical scenes.
One notable highlight within the cathedral is the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, which houses a precious 14th-century wooden crucifix. This masterpiece of religious art is beautifully crafted and holds great significance for the local community.
Attending a Mass or a religious ceremony at the Giovinazzo Cathedral can be a profound experience, allowing you to witness the spiritual devotion of the locals and appreciate the sacred atmosphere within this historic place of worship.

But the beauty of Giovinazzo doesn’t stop at its historic charm and culinary delights. The town boasts some of the most stunning beaches in Puglia, with crystal-clear turquoise waters inviting you to take a refreshing dip. I found myself spending lazy afternoons stretched out on the soft sand, soaking up the sun and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.
Bari is only 28.5 km via the SS16 from Giovinazzo. If you don’t have your own transport, hop on the train to Bari Centrale. The train ride takes around 20 minutes. It’s also the cheapest way to get to Bari from Giovinazzo
There are taxi services available but I suggest you save that money for your Bari shopping.
