American Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes certainly is one of the most iconic dishes in America. This southern classic is especially beloved in Alabama.

Serving Suggestion:

***They are fantastic to serve as an appetizer, with a nice dip.

However, to those of us not living in America, this dish might sound strange, so:

Yes, it is made from unripe tomatoes which are coated with cornmeal and then fried.

A delicious way of using tomatoes that are not yet red and juicy.

Traditionally they use cornmeal or mealie meal. For our recipe, we used a combination of Mealie Meal and Cake Flour.

Difficulty: Easy

Cuisine: American

Makes: 4 Servings

Ingredients:

4 large green tomatoes
70 g mealie meal
5 ml salt
1 egg
40 g cake flour
sunflower oil for shallow frying (preferred method)

How to make Fried Green Tomatoes:

Cut the tomatoes into 1.5 cm thick slices.
Mix the mealie meal and salt.
Beat the eggs in a separate bowl.
Now coat the tomato slices with the cake flour, dip in the egg mixture and then coat with the mealie meal.
Fry the slices on both sides in shallow oil until golden brown and soft when tested with a skewer.
Serve immediately.

Fried Green Tomatoes are delicious with a Greek yogurt and cucumber tzatziki dip on hot summer days. There is no special secret as to which type of tomatoes to use. You can use any tomato. As long as it is still green (not ripe). So if you’ve planted up a patch of tomatoes this year and your crop yield more than you can handle, this is an excellent recipe to keep handy.
