This self-governing archipelago, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, is a unique travel destination and something worth adding to your travel bucket list. The Faroe Islands are one of those hidden gems with fabulously-spectacular nature scenes everywhere.
The Faroe Islands (or simply called Faroes) comprise 18 rocky, volcanic islands situated roughly in the middle between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean. Therefore it is a perfect stop should you wish to explore and travel to Norway or Iceland. You are also quite close to Scotland (320 kilometers (200 miles) north-northwest of Scotland).
Certainly, the first thing you’ll notice upon arrival is the many lush grass rooftops on the buildings as well as the spectacular natural scenery. Complimented by the beautiful mountains and amazing coastline, this is also a paradise to the many seabirds and Puffins living here. For us humans, it is also a hikers’ paradise.
The national language of the Faroe Islands is Faroese. Danish is the official second language, but most people speak English.
The best time to visit the Faroe Islands is from June through to August, during which time the weather is a bit warmer and there are fewer rainy days.
To explore the Faroe Islands I would suggest about 7 days, but taking a North Atlantic Ocean Cruise that includes more places, are actually ideal. After all, you are traveling all the way, so why not take the time to explore more destinations as part of your trip.
The capital of the Faroe Islands is Tórshavn. The city is surrounded by beautiful majestic mountains: to the North-west (Husareyn) and to the South-west (Kirkjuboreyn). The harbour is served by the Smyril Line international ferry service to Denmark and Iceland.
However, Vágar Airport (FAE) is the only airport in the Faroe Islands and is located 1 NM east of the village of Sørvágur, on the island of Vágar. From here you can take a ferry to get to your destinations.

The Múlafossur Waterfall (Photo above) is a popular tourist attraction. You’ll have fabulous photo opportunities with this spectacular waterfall tumbling over the cliffs into the ocean.
You just have to hike up to the Kallur Lighthouse (also referred to as the Kalsoy Lighthouse). This is a spectacular viewpoint and also one of the island’s biggest tourist attractions.
