Iceland’s Iconic Golden Circle is a world-famous tourist route located in southwest Iceland, just outside the capital city of Reykjavík. This route is called the Golden Circle because it forms a loop on the map, making it an ideal self-drive tour.
Stay tuned! Towards the end of this post, we’ll also dive into the vibrant charm of Reykjavík as an added bonus to our Golden Circle adventure.
The Golden Circle is well-known for its three main natural attractions: Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. But, did you look at the map? Yes, there is an additional stop point! It’s almost like a hidden gem and I’m about to spill the beans.
However, before I continue, know that if you don’t have your own transport to do this trip, you CAN still have this amazing experience. As we go along, I’ll give you the link to book the trip: Imagine… sit back, relax, and enjoy. Let someone else do the driving, and you take the photos!
Let me tell you why this is a trip to put on your bucket list! I’ll also be sharing important travel tips like when to go, where to stay, and the actual distances between the key stops. In addition, I’ll also tell you why you must stop at a charming town called: Hveragerði. Seatbelts on, here we go!
45 kilometers (28 miles), approximately a 45-minute drive.
Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first Icelandic parliament, the Alþingi, was founded in 930 AD on this site. This makes it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. The Alþingi was held in Þingvellir until 1798, and it played a crucial role in Iceland’s history.
Þingvellir National Park lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. This unique geological feature allows you to see the effects of plate tectonics firsthand.
60 kilometers (37 miles), approximately a 50-minute drive.
The Geysir Geothermal Area is famous for the Strokkur geyser, which erupts frequently, usually every 5-10 minutes. It’s quite a sight to see as it shoots hot water and steam high up into the air, reaching impressive heights.
Besides Strokkur, the area is packed with other geothermal wonders like hot springs bubbling away, mud pots simmering with mud bubbles, and fumaroles emitting steam from the ground. It’s like a natural wonderland where you can experience the Earth’s inner heat up close and personal. The landscape is unique and captivating: a glimpse into Iceland’s volcanic and geothermal activity. It’s definitely a must-visit spot if you’re fascinated by natural phenomena and enjoy being awed by the power of nature!
10 kilometers (6 miles), approximately a 10-minute drive.
Gullfoss Waterfall is one of Iceland’s most iconic and popular waterfalls. It’s located on the Hvítá River and showcases the sheer power of nature as it plunges down two cascades into a narrow canyon. The total drop is about 100 feet (30 meters), and the sight of the water thundering down into the canyon is truly awe-inspiring.
You can’t help but marvel at the raw beauty and force of Gullfoss. The mist rising from the waterfall creates rainbows on sunny days, adding to the magical atmosphere. The location itself, amidst Iceland’s rugged landscape, enhances the experience, making it a must-see destination for anyone exploring Iceland’s natural wonders.
70 kilometers (43 miles), approximately a 1-hour drive.
Hveragerði is a charming town known for its geothermal activity. By including Hveragerði in your Golden Circle trip, you add a final touch of adventure and beauty.
As you’re heading back to Reykjavík I am confident you will agree the Golden Circle is the best day trip.
